Learning a second language will help you connect with people from other cultures. Purpose: We’re told to “become acquainted with all good books, and with languages, tongues, and people” (D&C 90:15). Learning another language helps you to communicate and connect with more people. Also, if you decide to go on a mission, there is a good chance that you will be asked to preach the gospel in a foreign language. Learning a few phrases of another language will give you a head start. Goal Ideas Make a list of the languages that you would like to learn. Pick one of these languages. Learn a few signs in American Sign Language or your country’s respective sign language. Ask a native speaker in your ward how to say basic phrases (“hello,” “how are you,” etc.). Download a language-learning app on your device. There are many free apps available that will teach you words and phrases from your chosen language, along with providing daily exercises that will help you practice what you learn. Sign up for a language class at your school or your community. Related Resources Quentin L. Cook, “The Lord is My Light,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2015 Russell T.
