Dear Joshua Perkey:
I am very interested in applying for the Gospel Living writing internship. The following
paragraphs describe my skills in journalism, creative writing, and editing that qualify me for this
position:
Journalism Skills: In my current public relations internship at Brigham Young University’s
College of Nursing, I have been able to practice my writing skills and gain journalism
experience. I interview nursing students, alumni, and faculty about their time in the nursing
program or about happenings connected to the College of Nursing. I also write and publish news
articles based on these interviews for the College of Nursing blog, Learning the Healer’s Art. I
have also gained experience in working on multiple projects simultaneously. During my first
day, I was assigned to do two interviews, write an article for the College of Nursing magazine by
the end of the week, and set up an interview with a nursing student. By pacing myself, I was able
to complete the interviews and articles by their respective deadlines.
Creative Writing Skills: I will be graduating with a creative writing minor in April. Throughout
the creative writing minor, I have been able to write both humorous and serious essays and
several short stories. I have gained experience in writing for a young adult audience. This last
fall, I was mentored by YA author Carol Lynch Williams. During this mentorship, I continued
working on a contemporary young adult novel that I had started in her Writing for Children and
Adolescents class. By the end of this mentorship, I was able to complete an additional 116 pages
of my novel. This mentorship also helped me gain experience in meeting my deadlines and
pushing through writer’s block.
Editing Skills: I worked at Brigham Young University’s Department of Continuing Education as
an editorial assistant for two and a half years. There I was able to practice copyediting and
substantive editing by editing transcripts and PowerPoints for online classes.
I feel like my journalism, creative writing, and editing skills make me a qualified candidate for
this position. I would love to meet you and share what I can bring to the Gospel Living app.
Sincerely,

Lyndee Johns
