Subject Outline

Aims
This course is designed to expose students to the process of building construction, the
components of buildings and the materials, skills and tools & equipment used in shaping
them.
The emphasis is on familiarization by direct handling and observation.
The course is visualized as having three essential components described below-:
1. lecture course in materials and methods of construction,
2. Building workshop which may be conducted within the School and at specific
venues outside
3. Construction studio wherein principles and practices shall be applied to the
production of meaningful working details and drawings.

Learning Outcomes :
The basic objective is not only to understand basic principles of construction technology, but also be
able to apply to the proposed architectural expressions. The learning outcome of the subject include:
 Ability to prepare of self-explanatory drawings, which are also good in their logical technical
content.
 Ability to devise construction detailing of a mezzanine in an existing building using timber as
a main material
 Ability to innovate within the construction systems (load bearing or framed) for an existing
design based on the requirements of the building (as per future plans)
 Able to explore & understand different materials used in framed structure, partition, panelling
and other construction detailing through market study / case-study

The Course outlined below gives a general direction to be taken in the fulfilment of the objectives and
each faculty may choose to select topics according to its chosen thrust / philosophy. The range of the
topics mentioned leaves sufficient scope of freedom for the faculty to exercise freedom in its detailed
teaching program. Thus, a breakup into semester wise course has been left to the individual teacher.

Methodology:
1. Introduction to materials and construction through lectures and studio exercises.
2. Site visits to gain knowledge about construction details.
3. Introduction to basic construction methods and elements.
4. Combining Workshop with the studio to build modules using the material

Teaching Approach

The approach of the studio would be to engage the students with one small scale project in which they
will understand detailing, dimensioning and grids layout
They will understand the process of laying out different materials and members in accordance with
the grid design

The project based approach shall be adopted to bring out the comprehensive nature of design and
construction undertaken as parallel process instead of compartmentalised approach of fitting building
process into a design or discarding innovative design due to practicality of building.

For the purpose of skill development it is proposed that the initial design concept is done as a
proportional free hand sketch and final output will be delivered through hand drafted sheet
For better understanding of details and assembly, student will be encouraged to make scaled models
