THE FILIPINO HERO
OF THE NEW
MILLENNIUM
by: John Manalo
genre: Essay
form: Non Fiction
On June12, 1898, the first Philippine flag was raised by
General Emilio Aguinaldo in his residence in Kawit Cavite. This
signaled the
Filipinos independence from the hands of the oppressive
Spaniards who dominated our country for more than three
centuries.
Now is 2019,so this year we celebrate the centenary of
Philippine independence. Thanks to out heroes, known and
unknown, who died without seeing the dawn of independence.
Our country is now a recognized republic, an independent
state.
The Philippines is a country rich in natural resources, but
the Filipinos are an impoverished nation. We still belong
among the Third World countries, the developing nations, the
growing economies, the poor citizens of the world.
I am a new Filipino hero. I am nationalistic. I am proud to be a
Filipino. I pride myself with a rich cultural heritage. I love my
language, my religion, my culture, my art. I patronize
Philippine-made products I develop my personal resources-
talents and skills-so that I will become productive.
I am patriotic. I love my country. I am ready anytime to depend
it from intruders. I love my countrymen, that I am committed to
serve them to the best of my ability. I am pro-Philippines. I am
a hero of the new millennium. But I am not alone. You, you, and
you are heroes, too. We are all heroes in our own little ways.
Heroism still lives and will live on and on as the likes of late
Lino Bronka, Lea Salonga, Kaya Ramsey, Paeng Nepomoceno,
Onyok Velasco bring honor and fame to our country, as the
Filipino seamen, domestic helpers and the other OFW take be
in dollars to boost our economy.

Just like Filipino, English plays a similar
role– a tool for unity and understanding in a
worldwide scale. While Chinese is the
language spoken by the biggest number of
speaker’s, considering China’s population
which is one of the largest in the world.
English remains to be the most widely used
and generally accepted universal language.
English is everywhere. Attend a conference
of the United Nations and you’ll find the UN
delegates of different nationalities discuss
international issues in English. If one doesn’t
know English well, he or she needs an
interpreter. The world is united by one
language and that is English.

HOW THE
INTERNET HAS
CHANGED THE
NEWS

BY SUSAN V. OPLE
FORM: NON FICTION
GENRE: ESSAY
During Marcos years, the print media dominated
the news. My father had already sensed a change in the
air. He had seen the emerging importance of television news
even when his own press releases were written with print
media in mind.Today, the power to report the news resides in
not just one medium, we are all citizens journalist. Bad news
travels even faster once viral. Good
news has a better fighting chance to get around. There are no
real deadlines for Internet-based journalism. Media could and
should no longer ignore the power to influence of the Internet
on how news is delivered according to radio anchor Jake
Maderazo. Internet has influenced the news, anchors read
aloud from viewer’s reaction on Twitter and Facebook. Even
radio programs on AM and FM stations are using Facebook to
draw more listeners. Most government agencies remain in the
Jurrasic age where the act of faxing press releases is the key
pillar of their communications program.
In business or government, ignorance of the Internet is never
bliss because digital conversation never cease. In the field of
communication, one is now required to conquer the Internet
only to understand it. News of all kinds gets around faster. The
velocity by which it travels feeds the hunger of cyber
habitants. We have become generalist, crossing the thin
line between information and education several times in a day.
Soon, all of us will have nearly the same access to news at birth
but it would be the depth of reporting that matters.

ALL COLLEGE TEACHERS MUST BE
READING TEACHERS
BY: ESTHER L. BARACEROS
FORM: NON FICTION
GENRE: ESSAY
“All College Teachers Must Be Reading Teachers” is an essay which elaborates on
the necessity of teachers in higher education institutions (HEI’s) to help their
students learn by teaching the letter to read for academic success English 2 (CHED
MEMO, 2008) is a course that primarily aims at developing the reading and
thinking abilities of students for academic study. It enables learners to enhance
their HOTS or higher order thinking skills such as inferential, critical, creative, and
appreciative thinking for comprehending or understanding academic texts.
Academic study pertains to students’ thorough examination or inquiry of a certain
subject matter or topic to deepen or increase their understanding of their chosen
topic. It involves a scientific or systematic search of knowledge, mostly grounded
on learning activities in higher-education institutions like universities or colleges.
Analogous to the word scholarly Scholar does not simply refer to a student who
enjoys a tuition fee discount, but it primarily pertains to one who spends much time
in studying a particular subject matter not only for his own intellectual growth but
for world progress as well. Applying for this line to reading for academic study, one
has to drive or push students to read by doing extra effort to motivate or create in
them an intrinsic interest to read completely and thoroughly any reading material
assigned to them Motivating tertiary-level students to read is not merely giving
them the title of the book or the number of chapters or pages to read. Rather it is
an act of activating them whatever background knowledge the students have about
their reading assignment. Why do we need to do this? Such schema activities can
be done by helping students familiarize themselves with some high-falutin or
technical terms through context clues or graphic organizers, anticipating,
predicting, and speculating about the reading assignment. All of these aimed at
creating a link between what the readers already know and what the writer wrote
in the text. What if every university or college in the country compel all its teachers
to undergo one or two day seminar-workshop on reading at the onset of the
semester, will it help in alleviating the deteriorating reading abilities of students
and instead, increase the number of college graduates equipped with HOTs that are
necessary for global competitiveness or a niche in this Era of Globalization or
Knowledge Explosion?

Education Gives
Luster to the
Motherland
BY: JOSE P. RIZAL

Jose Rizal’s poem, Education Gives

Luster to the Motherland, mainly discusses the
importance of education for the country and for
one’s self. The poem suggests that education
promotes equality, peace, freedom, and
development.  Moreover, Rizal saw that the
qualities of being educated resonate from you
to everyone else. This may also mean that the
status of the country reflects how educated its
inhabitants are.
