Linear Regression and Correlation Group Work

1. Find a table comparing two quantities. Example: weight and height, age and bone density, price
and demand, etc.
2. Create a similar table as below, using your own set of data.

Income Food expenditure

𝑥𝑦 𝑥 𝑦
𝑥 𝑦
35 9 315 1225 81
49 15 735 2401 225
21 7 147 441 49
39 11 429 1521 121
15 5 75 225 25
28 8 224 784 64
25 9 225 625 81
212 64 2150 7222 646

3. Compute for 𝑆𝑆 , 𝑆𝑆 , 𝑥̅ , 𝑦, 𝑎, 𝑏, and the linear regression model, 𝑦 = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥

4. PLOT each pairs of data and the line 𝑦 = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥. You may use desmos.com or other graphing
tools or sites.
5. Use the graph of the line to predict/estimate the value of 𝑦 using a value of 𝑥 that is not on your
table. (example shown in picture above: if 𝑥 = 40, then 𝑦 = 11.709)

6. Compute for 𝑆𝑆 and the correlation coefficient, 𝑟.

7. Write an interpretation of the value obtained in number 5. Explain in the context of your chosen
data.

8. Format of Write UP:

I. Table of quantities 5%
II. Table from number 2 20%
III. Computation of values asked in number 3 25%
IV. Plot/Graph and prediction 20%
V. Computation of values asked in number 5 20%
VI. Interpretation of 𝑟 10%

9. Print and submit on Feb 7/8, class time.
