The AFP screening test can tell whether the baby is

at risk of having birth defects and genetic

abnormalities. It is usually done between 15 & 20
weeks

It may be done as often as daily during high risk

pregnancy. It is an ultrasound that looks for specific signs that
the baby is still doing well in the uterus. The tech will look for
movement from the baby, check the heart rate, measure the fluid
around the baby, check the placenta to see if it is aging too much,
and watch for signs of the baby practicing its breathing. The baby
has a certain amount of time to do all these things, and is given a
score for each section.
