K-pop should be banned in the Philippines

Music makes us feel relax. It helps us have our peace in mind. Music has different
types of genres but let’s talk about a genre that many people loves. The genre K-pop.
K-pop is making its way into the media of the world. It is starting to be acknowledge by
many. In the Philippines K-pop is very popular especially to young adults and
teenagers. However, majority of the K-pop fans become addicted to this type of music
genre. Their standards for music will increase making our own music to be neglected
because their choice of music becomes different. They spend more time listening to
foreign music. According to Isha (2014), Representative Atienza wants to ban every
foreign music and series in our country. Many opposed this with too many complaints in
social media. Saying that if K-pop will be banned in our country our economy will drop.
Rep. Atienza received many negative comments but let me tell you why K-pop should
be banned in the Philippines.
First, K-pop should be banned because it affects our own culture. According to the
research of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology the Philippines is
now experiencing neo-colonization under South Korea. As observed, more and more
Filipinos are becoming Koreans although not by nationality but by taste and look. The
Koreans are undeniably conquering our country through their music, dramas and fashion.
The invasion is negatively affecting not only the artist and business in our country but also
the essence of being a true Filipino. Second, K-pop is a threat to OPM. According to Alton
(2015) OPM might one day vanish because of teenagers who are addicted to K-pop. He
said that teenagers’ addiction to K-pop affects our own music. The sales of K-pop albums
in our country are much higher than the sales of our own music. Also, teenagers’ addiction
to K-pop changes their taste to music leaving OPM behind. Appreciating others music is
okay however neglecting our own music is not okay. Let’s support our own music so that
it can be given a chance to be known by many. Lastly, K-pop requires financial demands.
On a survey student waste their money in buying K-pop goods instead of saving their
money and keep it for a better use. Moreover, some of them even buy concert tickets for
the K-pop group they support. The concerts tickets are ranging from PHP 5,000 to PHP
25,000. Many of the students use their allowance in buying their tickets making them
penny less and problematic after the concert. However, buying tickets using their
allowance is a big mistake because they did not even consider the outcome of their action
and even their parents reaction if they find out what they have done.
To sum it up, K-pop affects our own culture. K-pop is a threat to OPM and K-pop
requires financial demands. Teenagers becomes addicted to K-pop that because of this
they tend to buy K-pop goods even if it is expensive. Moreover, it is a threat because it
changes the perspective of Filipinos towards our own culture and they prefer to be more
like a Korean. With so much complaints and opposition of banning K-pop what would
happen to our own music, culture and identity? Banning K-pop will not surely make our
music be known but it can surely make our country create a phenomenon that will widely
spread someday. Let’s stop making other foreign music to go higher instead let us make
ours better. Together let us support Representative Atienza in his proposal to ban every
foreign music and series in our country to give our own creation of art a time to shine.
