The purpose of this course is to learn leadership and organization involved in Events
Planning. A system of committees is developed to procure, organize, and design floral and
plant materials for large events. The outcome of this course is to enable each student to
understand the dynamics of organizing a large event, and developing specific portions of the
event through small group cooperation. The class is repeatable so that students may increase
their responsibility through multiple opportunities to stage an event by participating more than
one time during their tenure on the campus.
Course Outcomes or objectives:
Demonstrate understanding of event planning by participating successfully in the Fashion and
Floral Gala preparations, and event.
Explain the organization required to set up, run, and strike after the event.
Demonstrate construction of basic bridal flowers, stage decorations, and other floral
adornments.
Course Expectations:
Students are expected to participate in class each week. There will be no make-up quizzes, or
presentations for missed classes. In case of a school excused absence quiz must be made up
within one week of the absence. It is the responsibility of the student to contact a TA and
schedule the make-up lab.
There are no attendance points for coming to class, but there will be an in-class quiz, or review
each day that will have point associated with it. We will take the quiz at the beginning of
class. If you do not come before I hand out the quiz to the class you may not take the quiz.
If you are not in class you will not get the points for that quizzes and visitor reviews. If you are
tardy, or if you leave early, I will mark your daily quiz down 15 points. As a result, attendance in
class is critical to your grade.
As stated above there will be no make up for quizzes, but I will drop one quiz that is your lowest
score of the semester.
Participating in the Gala event is an integral part of this class. You need to look at your
schedule at the beginning of the semester and if you have conflicts during the week of the
Gala event you should drop this class and take it another semester. It is a large portion of your
grade, and you will not pass the class if you can not participate.
Grading Breakdown:
94 – 100% = A
90 - 93 = A-
87 - 89 = B+
84 - 86% = B
80 - 83% = B-
77 - 79% = C+
Honor Code and ethics:
BYU-Idaho standards will be followed in class. Failure to comply with them may be reflected in
your grade in the course. One of the major goals at BYU-Idaho is that of providing quality
educational opportunities in a rich spiritual environment. To obtain this desired level of spiritual
influence, students are asked to observe all points of the Code of Honor including the dress and
grooming standards.
Let me remind you of the commitment you made to live the Code of Honor: specifically...be
honest, refrain from plagiarizing or any other form of cheating; obey all University rules and
regulations; help others in fulfilling their responsibilities under the Code of Honor; and comply
with the college dress and grooming standards.
The dress and grooming standard is fully defined in the BYU-Idaho catalog. The appearance
hoped for in dress and grooming is best achieved through the guidelines of modesty and
cleanliness. Be modest in your attire and neat and clean in your personal appearance.
Conscientious attention to appropriate dress and grooming will enhance your performance in
class and contribute to the spiritual environment of BYU-Idaho. I invite your willing participation
in this expectation. I reserve the right to reflect your behavior and conduct in the final grade
you receive in the class.
Reasonable Accommodation
In compliance with applicable disability law, qualified students with a disability may be entitled
to a “reasonable accommodation.” It is the student's responsibility to disclose to the teacher
any special need they may have before the end of the first week of class. This course requires a
high level of eye-hand coordination, and manual dexterity that cannot be avoided without
limiting the learning experience.
