Answer All Questions. Assume any relevant data, if required.
Answers for Group – A and Group – B should be written on separate pages.
Figures at the right hand margin indicate marks.
Q. GROUP - A Marks
No
1a Results of chlorine demand test on a raw water are given below: 3
Sample Chlorine dose Residual chlorine after
No (mg/l) 10 min contact (mg/l)
1 0.2 0.19
2 0.4 0.36
3 0.6 0.50
4 0.8 0.48
5 1.0 0.2
6 1.2 0.4
7 1.4 0.6
8 1.6 0.8
Sketch a chlorine demand curve. What is the break point dose and what is the
chlorine demand at dose of 1.2 mg/l?

Design a grit chamber for maximum waste water flow of 0.156 m3/sec with the
1b horizontal velocity as 0.2 m/sec and detention time period as one minute. 2

A multi-tray settling chamber having 8 trays, including the bottom surface,

2 handles 8 m3/s of air at 20 °C. The trays are spaced 0.25 m apart and the chamber 5
is to be 1 m wide and 4 m long. What is minimum particle size of density 2000
kg/m3 that can be collected with 100 % efficiency? What will be the efficiency of
the settling chamber if 50 µm particles are to be removed? Assume µg at 20 °C as
1.8 x 10-5 kg/m-s.

3
Design a standard rate trickling filter to treat 6.0 Mld of sewage of BOD of 5
210 mg/l. The final effluent should be 30 mg/l and organic loading rate is
320 g/m3/d. Also calculate the efficiency of the trickling filter.

4 Discuss EIA of any one industry

5 Write short notes on ANY TWO.

(a) Pressure filter 2.5 X 2
(b) Impacts of noise pollution =5
(c) ESP
(d) Global environmental challenge.

GROUP B

6a
Assume that a “windowless room” contains three light bulbs (say, X, Y, and Z),
one fuse and one switch. The probabilities of occurrence of fault events power 2
failure, switch failure, fuse failure, bulb X failure, bulb Y failure, and bulb Z
failure are 0.07, 0.05, 0.02, 0.01, 0.01, and 0.03, respectively. Calculate the
probability of occurrence of the unsafe event “dark room.”

What is meant by PPE? Describe various PPEs used to protect from hazards and 3
7 accidents.

What is meant by Hazard and Operability (HAZOP)?

9 Compare ergonomic aspects of a big classroom and of an examination hall. 5

Write a comparative discussion between Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Fault 5
Tree Analysis (FTA) with the help of examples.
