Purpose

The laboratory induction is a compulsory procedure that must be completed by each student at the
beginning of or prior the each semester of their program of study prior to entering and conducting any
activity within the laboratory. This induction process continues each semester whilst the student is
enrolled in their program for any course requiring a lab. The student needs only to attend one basic
induction session per semester.

Each student must read, sign and return this document prior to the first laboratory exercise and failure
to do so will result in the student not being given access into the laboratory. Students who fail to comply
with laboratory safety protocols or requirements will be removed from the laboratory and in extreme
cases may face disciplinary action from the Executive Dean, Faculty of Science under Federation
University Australia Regulation 6.1, Student Discipline.

• Dangers associated with specific areas/ lab specific

• Location of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

• Location of Best Operating Procedures file (BOP)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements

• Specific PPE/clothing requirements associated with the student’s role

• Disposal/storage of waste materials

• As specified by the course coordinator/laboratory technician

Laboratory Equipment and Safety

• Use of equipment

o As specified by course coordinator/lab technician.

• Care, personal conduct, and maintenance

o No food or drink in the laboratory.

o No horseplay, unsafe, or unapproved procedures.

o Practice good posture during lifting.

o Report all perceived risks to responsible staff.

o Aggressive, bullying or harassing behavior will not be tolerated


and such conduct will be reported to the Dean for
disciplinary action under Fed Uni Regulation 6.1.1.

o All students, staff and visitors must follow and comply with all
instructions and directions of the staff member or lab tech,
refusal or failure to do so will result in immediate removal from
the laboratory and a report will be forwarded to the Executive Dean.
