CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

People are drinking to socialie, celebrate, and relax. The alcohol are often has a strong

effect on people and throughout history.

Alcohol, does many things to your body. While drinking might make you feel good, but

abusing alcohol may lead to serious complication.

Alcohol does many different things to your body. While drinking might make you feel

good, abusing alcohol may lead to serious complications. It effects the body both

mentally and physically. Alcohol will slur your speech, increase your reaction time, make

you lose co-ordination, and causes impotence. By drinking you can get many diseases,

some may even be life threatening.

Alcoholism is a chronic disease that is progressive and many times fatal. About 13% of

the population have a problem with alcohol. Alcohol effects almost every cell in the

body. After being exposed to it for a long time the brain becomes dependent of it. It

causes the person with alcoholism to depend on the alcohol in order to deal with certain

things in everyday life like people and work. After a while they loose control over when

to stop drinking and how much they consume.

One disease that you can get from drinking to much alcohol is heart disease. Large

amounts of alcohol can cause the heart to beat irregularly and also raise the blood

pressure. It also damages the heart muscle, which will eventually lead to heart failure.

Women have a greater chance of this then males.

Cancer is also another disease that you can develop. By drinking regularly it increases

the chances of developing lung, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal, urinary

tract, liver, and brain cancers. About 75% of cancers of the esophagus and 50% of

cancers of the mouth, throat, and larynx are related to alcohol. Women that drink raise

their chances of getting breast cancer.

Liver disorders are serious problems that can develop. Once the alcohol enters the liver

it changes to a toxic substance called acetaldehyde, which cause serious damage.

Malnutrition contributes to liver disease because of empty calories from alcohol, which

reduces the appetite. First the liver will get inflamed which is known as hepatitis. Then

the liver will develop cirrhosis.

Alcohol is projected as part of the day-to-day lives as portrayed in soap operas,

basketball leagues, comedy shows and music video channels.

Total recorded consumption of Filipinos is 3.75 litres of pure alcohol for those litres of

pure alcohol for those 15 years and above years and above and increases by 10%

every year (Filipinos only third to Thailand and Japan). 38.9% of Filipinos are occasional

alcohol drinkers, 11.1% are regular drinkers (13% males and 5.9% females) while

females) while 4.8% are heavy drinkers (6.6% males and % males and 1.3% females)

though children. Filipino drinkers drink beer (78.5%), liquor--rum, gin, whisky and

lambanog (70.6%), and wine, tuba, sangria, sherry (42.4%).

Substance use, including alcohol, typically begins in the adolescence and continues or

peaks through the adulthood often with a remitting and relapsing course. Consequently,

a large proportion of the clinical and research attention is directed toward younger and

adult age groups, leaving the elderly with substance use problems a relatively neglected

subgroup. The substance use from an earlier age may continue into later life making it

more chronic and complicated. Occasionally, the onset of substance use/misuse maybe
in old age. Further, aging-related medical conditions make the older substance users a

vulnerable group for harmful consequences.

Alcohol affects every organ in the body as well as damages a developing fetus.

Intoxication can impair brain function and motor skills; heavy use can increase risk of

certain cancers, stroke, and liver disease. Alcoholism or alcohol dependence is a

diagnosable disease characterized by a strong craving for alcohol, and/or continued use

despite harm or personal injury. Alcohol abuse, which can lead to alcoholism, is a

pattern of drinking that results in harm to one's health, interpersonal relationships, or

ability to work.25 The National Institutes of Health reports 15% of the people living in the

United States are considered “problem drinkers.” Within this population, 5%-10% of the

men and 3%-5% of the women could be labeled as alcoholics

A. Statement of the Problem

Alcohol abuse is one of the most rampant problems in our country nowadays. And it

doesn't vary on age- the young ones up to the aged individuals in our country are

experiencing alcoholism. Therefore, the researchers find the topic significant and aim to

answer the following problems:

1. What are the factors that lead to the abuse of alcoholic beverages?

2. What are the effects and risks of alcohol abuse to the respondents in all aspects of

life?

3. Who are more prone to experience alcohol abuse?

4. How can we eliminate the widespread abuse of alcohol in our country?

B. Hypothesis

There is no significant.
C. Significance of the Study

The researchers came up with this topic because it is so important for all to

know about the impact of alcohol abuse. It affects every elderly especially the children

when they saw the elderly doing such things. There are some people who abuse alcohol.

They spend most of the day just drinking alcohol. Usually, they do not notice that what

they are doing is not right. This study wants to reduce the alcohol addiction or abuse of

older adults . This study is significant to the following:

People. It will help them to know that they should not drink too much alcohol

Students. It will help them reduce drinking habits

Parents. It will help them guide their children on the right path of life.

Future Researchers. It will help them to have some ideas and develop

information for their research.

D. Scope and Limitation of the Study

The research study’s main focus is about the factors which trigger the behavioral

problems of selected high school students of San Guillermo Academy A.Y. 2019-2020.

This would be conducted inside the school campus. The target population is composed

of 4 students from Grade 9, Grade 10, Grade 11, and Grade 12. Gender does not affect

the scope. Questions will be ask to each of the respondents. Likewise, the result of the

study is based on the answers of the respondents.

The researchers limited this research only to students who are belong to the

population of the study. They considered working on this study to determine the factors

that trigger the behavioral problems of high school student.

E. Definition of Terms

The researchers have prepared some of the terms and its meaning that we have

used in our research:
