MATHEMATICS IN OUR WORLD
Activity 1: A Survey for Symmetries
Materials:
Camera (Smartphone’s Camera) Bond Paper Manila Paper Glue or Scotch Tape
Ruler Pencils Pen Mirror (if necessary)
PROCEDURE:
1. Take a tour (at least 30 minutes) outside the room and look around at your surroundings.
2. As you walk around, take a close – up picture of the things that naturally exist in the place e.g., a leaf, a
flower, an insect such as butterfly, a bird and etc.
3. Sort the pictures into two groups – one for those objects with symmetry and one for those objects which don’t
have symmetry.
4. After sorting the pictures, print 1 picture (wallet size) from each category (w/ symmetry and w/o symmetry).
5. Observe the pictures. Is there any possible way in which you can fold the picture such that the parts of the
object in the picture will become identical to each other?
6. Once you identified a way, use the pencil or pen and ruler to mark the line of symmetry.
7. Once done, paste the pictures inside the box according to category.
8. Discuss the result using the guide questions below.
Guide Questions for the discussion:
a. How does symmetry gives color and meaning to our surroundings?
b. What would our life be if there’s no shapes (symmetry)?

Part 2:
Print the same pictures shown above (inside the box) on a short - size of bond paper.
