THE KANSAI
AIRPORT
INTERNATIONAL
Today, and with the passing of the years, becomes more and more common to hearpeopl
e talk about their air travel, the unique experience of fly in the Majesty of air transport. We
have people who we have not yet met the whim of transported in this way, but there
are who have the opportunity of make it so on a daily basis, both that oneis ask
¿What may surprise them? So what would happen if I told you that there
is a wonderwithin civil engineering that could answer that question and surplus.
Is is of the Airport International of Kansai, an airport floating, if, an airport on an island arti-
ficial located in the Bay of Osaka, inside the enigmatic Japan.

It can be difficult to imagine a kind of floating airport, so before that nothing would
be important to clarify certain concepts that help us to better understand the why, this work
of civil engineering is so unique. Let's start by defining what is an airport. We understand
by airport as the terminals on land where to begin and conclude air transport journeys in
aircraft, well, now, that, we have a idea more clear of what is and airport, we continue to
define what is an artificial island; An articial island is an island that has been formed by
humans instead of by natural processes, usually using sand or rocks.
Let us focus now returned to our main idea, "The Kansai International Airport".
This airport went through a very rigorous process of building was divided into twophases,
phase 1 which was from 1987 to 1994, and the second phase which was from 1999 to 200
7, under the tutelage of Arq. Renzo Piano, born in Genoa on 14 September 1937.
The airport was built due to the inability to increase the size of the existing in the city of
Osaka, for this reason it was decided to create an island and build it there. The work consists
of simple materials such as sand, concrete and steel, which form a very rigid structure to
withstand typhoons and earthquakes that occur there. Kansai terminal was a novelty in its
time due to its architecture in the form of wave and it served to make Osaka the most
important city of the part south of Japan

This construction, especially the bridge and the island, were major innovations for the time
not so much for its novelty, since earlier made similar constructions, but if its size,
airport terminal more lies long in the world in the largest island in the world and the longe
st two-tier bridge in the world. This work was a challenge to build since he
left in evidence to the technology usedat the time, due to continuing problems, above all in
terms of a fundation in phase ll that i had the track enlargement were all the technological
innovations that due to failures in the construction of phase i were invented.
As element more novel, emphasizes the use of the GPS for the construction and news as
soon as the foundations of structures, reclaimed from the sea, as
well as the creation of newequipment for the seabed geological reading.
With regard to its aesthetic is can tell that is a construction very beautiful because the use of
the Steel, it takes a color similar to having the sea in this área, wich makes look intefrated
in the sea terminal.
Within it more remarkable as regards the impact retrieved from this work of engineering civi
have that social and culturally, the construction of this airport was the economic expansión
of Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto because thanks to it could compete with Tokyo and attract as
well to people of bussinesi passing of be a society fairly
Advanced to be the main reference in business to the South of Japan. In a geological field it
is normal to think that the creation of an artificial island has an impact in the area, and this
in turn generates a greater impact due to its size anddistance from shore
With regard to its integration, in the phase I highlights the architecture of the terminal in
form of wave and in the phase, emphasizes the integration of the fauna and marine flora to
affect Little posible. Finally in a fiel constructive, meant the greater integration of the
programs computer in them new construction and it it improves in the techniques of
foundation surface of the fund marine also in phase if developments were instroduced as
the construction from the GPS and detection system of the geology of the seafloor, main
element to determine seats.

In conclusion, it is important to know works of such magnitude, and specifically this

airport since that up forming part of the story to break with schemes already founded, and
leave us in the constroversy, to wich will be the limits of imagination to new structures in
this case, this work is clearly justified due to busines expansión has been Osaka and
surrounding cities since it´s construction and term to represent a symbol for the city since
it is a large and innovative structure architecturally. Its impact will be marked from for life
because socially and culturally this has left its mark and was a kick for the grear Works that
today in day are springing up and surely for the next generations.
