IT’S A DOG’S LIFE

Some people treat their pet dogs like humans. Here are two businesses that
might interest them. The Bau House Café in Seoul, South Korea, is designed
with both dogs and people in mind. At this unusual café, dogs are allowed to sit
on the tables, couches and windowsills. Everything in the café is waterproof,
even the paint on the walls. A mop, a towel and rolls of toilet paper are kept
nearby in case there’s any mess to clean up. Fifteen dogs live at the café, and
others come to visit with their owners. Some customers drop their dogs off at
the café while they run errands, or even for several days when they go on
holiday. The café is also popular with people who can’t afford a dog, but enjoy
the company of dogs. The café has got a normal menu for its human customers
which includes fruit drinks and noodles. Café workers hand out treats to the
dogs for free. Although dog meat is still a delicacy in some Korean restaurants,
it does not appear on the menu here. Another service for dogs and their
owners is www.DogCatRadio.com, an Internet radio station for pets that must
remain at home alone while their owners go to work. The station plays a lot of
disco music and owners say their pets love it. Although some songs have got
pet themes, like Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog, most are no different from the
songs on a mainstream radio station. Many dog owners are enthusiastic about
the new station because they feel that certain music calms their pets. Cristal
Newell, the owner of a dog day-care centre in Denver, comments that jazz and
light rock are soothing for dogs, while heavy metal and hip-hop drive them out
of control. However, animal experts maintain that there are no studies proving
that music affects animals. Perhaps the appeal of the radio station is that it
makes the owners feel that they are taking care of their pets in the best way
possible.
