QUEUEING PROBLEMS

1. The arrival times of vehicles at the entrance of a basketball stadium has a mean value of 30veh/hr.
It takes 1.5 min for the issuance of parking tickets to be bought for occupants of each car.
a. Determine the expected length of queue,
b. What is the average waiting time of vehicle in the queue?
c. What is the probability that there are no more than 5 veh at the gate including the veh being
served?

2. In a tollbooth at the end of an off-ramp of SLEX, 400 veh /hr arrive and the service rate of the
tollbooth is 600 veh/hr.
a. Determine the expected number of vehicles in the system?
b. Determine the expected time for the veh that wait
c. Determine the percentage of time that the operator of the tollbooth will be free,

3. At the Burger House, if the arrival rate is 1 customer every minute and the service rate is 1
customer every 45 seconds,
a. Find the expected number of customers in the system including those being serve
b. Find the average lengh of queue , the average waiting time, and average total delay. Assume an M/M/1
process.
c. How likely that you got your pile of hamburger in less than 1, 2, or 3 minutes?
d. How likely that there were more than 5 customers in front of you.
4. Given:
Arrival rate = 500 vph
Service rate = 700 vph

a. Determine the average wait time for veh that wait.

b. Determine the average queue in the system
c. Determine the percentage of time that the operator will be free.

5. A ramp has an arrival rate of 200 cars an hour and the ramp meter only permits 250 cars per hour, while
the ramp can store 40 cars before spilling over.
a. What is the probability that it is half-full, empty, full?
b. How many cars do we expect on the ramp?

6. The maximum number of vehicles that can enter the 0n-ramp of TPLEX is controlled by the
metering system which allows 4 vehicles to be on the ramp at any time due to heavy traffic in the
expressway. The arrival rate of vehicles at the on ramp is 420 veh/hr and the service rate that enters
the expressway is 525 veh /hr.
a. Determine the percent of time that the ramp is full.
b. What is the probability of 4 cars being on the ramp?
c. Expected number of vehicles in the system including vehicles being served
c. What is the expected number of vehicles on the ramp during peak hour?
7. There are 400 veh/hr arrives at a single booth located at the end of off-ramp on the SLEX. If the
veh can be serviced at the rate of 600 veh/hr, determine the percentage of time that the operator of
the single booth will be free.

8. The following data of an off-ramp of NLEX are as follows:

Arrival rate = 40 veh/hr which follows a Poisson distribution
Service rate = 1 minute and assumed to be exponentially distributed
Determine the average waiting time a driver waits before being served at the tollbooth
