PURSUIT

1. The purpose of a pursuit, regardless of speed, is the apprehension of a suspect who refuses to voluntarily
comply with the law requiring drivers to stop upon command. The primary goal of the Bibb County Sheriff's
Office is the protection of life and property. To the extent that a pursuit exposes any deputy, suspect, or
member of the general public to an unnecessary risk of harm or injury, then a pursuit is inconsistent with that
goal.

2. A pursuit is justified pursuant to O.C.G.A. 40-6-6

(a) The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle or law enforcement vehicle, when responding to an
emergency call, when in the pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, or when responding to but
not upon returning from a fire alarm, may exercise the privileges set forth in this Code section.

(b) The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle or law enforcement vehicle may:

1. Emergency Parking- A Deputy may park the emergency vehicle In prohibited parking areas but in a manner
which would not create a hazard. Blue lights will be activated if the patrol vehicle is parked in a location where
it might be a hazard (i.e vehicle accident locations), but sirens need not be activated while parked in
emergency parking situations.

2. Intersection Approach- Extreme caution shall be used when a deputy approaches an intersection in an
emergency situation. The deputy may proceed past a red or stop signal or a stop sign, only after ensuring that
all other traffic has yielded to the emergency vehicle. The deputy will use both emergency lights and siren
when going through an intersection in an emergency situation.

3. Siren Fluctuation- A deputy may fluctuate the sound of the siren so that the emergency vehicle will be
recognized as an emergency vehicle.

outside of our jurisdiction and arrest the violator upon the culmination of the pursuit.
