WATTMETER PROBLEM SOLVING

1. Two wattmeter are used to measure the power drawn by a balanced 3Ø, WYE-
connected load. If wattmeter A reads 575 watts and wattmeter B reads 350 watts,
calculate the power consumed by the load.

2. Two watt-meters are connected to measure power read W1 = 30kW and W2 =

55kW. Determine the total power and the power factor.

3. A three phase balanced load having a power factor of 0.52 lagging draws a line
current of 25A at 220V. If the two watt-meter method is used to measure the total
power consumed, determine the reading of each wattmeter.

4. A 460V, 3Ø motor draws 208 A with a power factor of 0.91 lagging. Determine the
readings registered on the wattmeters.

5. Two wattmeter are used to measure the power delivered to a balanced 3Ø,
DELTA-connected load. If wattmeter A reads 1000 watts and wattmeter B reads
500 watts, solve for the line current drawn by the load if the line voltage is 208V.

6. Two wattmeters connected to a three-phase 440V squirrel cage induction motor

indicate a total of 12kW. If the operating power factor of the motor is 0.4, determine
the individual reading of the wattmeters.

7. A three-phase balanced load takes a total of 6,360 watts. If two wattmeters are
connected in the circuit to measure this power and one of them registers 2,120
watts, what is the load power factor?

8. Two wattmeters are connected into a 3-phase, 3-wire, 220V line indicate 3.5kW
and 1.5kW. If the line current is 16A. Calculate the apparent power and the power
factor.

9. The input power to a three-phase motor was measured by two wattmeter method.
The readings were 35 KW and – 20 KW and the voltage was 630 V. Calculate
(a) the power factor (b) the line current.
