Burma

Burma was a province of British India in 1886. In 1941 Japan invaded Burma and
promised the indipendence from Britain, which was given in 1948 after the Second world
war. So Burma became a democratic republic. In 1962 there was a coup d’etat which
created a military government. The dictatorship lasted (durò) for 26 years.

In 1988 Aung San Suu Kyi created a League for Democracy and organised a non violent
protest which was supported by the people. She was arrested in 1989 and stayed in prison
for 6 years. She won the Nobel Prize for peace in 1991. From 2003 to 2010 she was
imprisoned again.

The situation in Buurma is still terrible, with civil wars, no development and no human
rights.
