THE ITALIAN UNIVERSITY GRADING SYSTEM
In Italian Universities grades are given on the basis of 30 points (10 points for each of the three members of the
examining commission). When the student’s performance is considered outstanding, a laude can be added by the
commission.
The minimum passing grade is 18/30. Grades below 18 are a fail and are not registered.
The following breakdown may help to illustrate the Italian grading system with reference to the US system:
LUISS Guido Carli USA Description
< 18 F Fail
Final graduation mark
The final graduation mark is given on the basis of 110 points (10 points for each of the eleven members of the
Graduation Commission). The procedure for calculating this mark is the following:
First, the student’s average grade point is multiplied by 11 and divided by 3 to obtain a base mark (e.g., grade point
average 28.65 x 11 = 315.15 : 3 = 105.05 base mark).
Then, the points awarded for the dissertation (“Tesi di Laurea”) are added to the base mark following the discussion of
the dissertation (e.g., 105.05 base mark + 4.95 dissertation = 110 final graduation mark). When the base mark is high
and the dissertation is very good, a laude can be awarded by the Commission.
Notes
The minimum graduation mark is 66, the maximum is 110 cum laude.
The honours (con lode) is not guaranteed or given automatically but it is awarded by the Graduation Commission. The
11 members of the Commission must agree on the lode.
