Guiding Questions for Need Assessment


 Who are the students?
 Their educational, experiential, etc.
backgrounds. Is it a homogenous group, do
they know each other? Do you know the
students?
 What are their motives & aspirations?
 Qualification? Jobs?
Improvement/development? Final exam?
 What are their learning and/or support needs?
 Understanding their diverse support needs. Be
aware about different learning styles.

 What are their strengths and weaknesses?
 Strengths may vary, but identifying the most
common and needed ones to the course is an
asset. Where do you face weaknesses (lack of
basic knowledge)?
 What level of difficulty can students cope with
or understand?
 Learners vary in terms of learning capability and or
maturity. How is the workload in parallel classes
(exam period, etc.)?

Activity
 Apply a need assessment to one of your
current classes or a class you plan in future
(15min).
 Form groups of three persons (one will be
presenting, one will give feedback and the third
person is the observer and controls the
feedback rules).
 After 10min you change roles.
 Everybody should present the results, give
feedback and observe (altogether 30min).
