Air Permeability and Recovery Test of Banana Fibre Pseudo Stems

What is Banana Pseudo Stem Fibre?

The pseudostem is the part of the banana plant that looks like a trunk. It is formed by the tightly
packed overlapping leaf sheaths. Even though the pseudostem is very fleshy and consists
mostly of water, it is quite sturdy and can support a bunch that weighs 50 kg or more

Why we chose Banana Fibre from Banana Plant?

Scientific Name of Banana: Musa Acuminate

Banana plant provides textile fibre which is called the banana fibre, which grows easily and is
mostly found in countries with tropical hot climates such as the Philippines. Our country is one
of the main exporters of banana and we are abundant and rich when it comes to these types of
resources, meaning the availability of materials when used in research will not be a problem at
all. Bananas are also cheap and can be found in almost every corner of the country as long as
you have a plant of banana tree. All banana plants have a variety of banana fibres in them.
These fibres are obtained after the fruit is harvested. The trunk of the banana plant (pseudo
stem) is thrown as an agricultural waste to a great extent. It is usually thrown away once the
plantain is harvested. According to research, banana fibre pseudo stem can be profitably
utilized for numerous applications and preparation of various products:

- Banana Plants can be used for packaging because of the resistance of the fibre to the
sea-water (hydrophobic) and its natural buoyancy
- Widely used for making power transmission ropes and cordage, wall drilling cables,
fishing nets and etc.
- Mats and Ropes that have a great result in terms of tensile strength
- Banana Fibres are reported to have been spun on the jute spinning machinery and used
handbags and other fancy products

Best thing about these fibres is that they are biodegradable and more environmentally-friendly
fibre sources.

In conclusion, banana-fibre based production processes, structure properties and suitability are
to be identified for various industrial applications. Because of this, we thought of testing the air
permeability and recovery test of banana fibre pseudo stem……

Recovery Test is standard test method for stretch properties of knitted fabrics for stretch
and fabric growth.

Air Permeability is the measure of air flow passed through a given area of a fabric. This
parameter influences the thermal comfort properties of fabrics to a large extent. When choosing
a fabric in terms of quality, we would want our clothes to feel refreshing (meaning a lot of air can
pass through the clothing)
