Executive Summary

Banana fibre is also known as Musa fibre and is one of the world’s strongest natural
fibres. The technology of banana fibre extraction has been developed in South India wherein a
good number of banana fibre extraction units have been running very successfully. Some firms
are exporting banana fibre products.

The banana fibre is being used for the weaving of clothes, for making Papers, handicraft
items etc. The banana fibre extraction process involves mechanical as well as automated
mechanical extraction techniques. Initially, the banana plant sections were cut from the main
stem of the plant and then rolled lightly to remove the excess moisture and impurities. A
machine consisting of two horizontal beams is used for the extraction process to avoid fibre
breaking. These fibres are then labelled and made ready for the lamination process. After
extraction of fibre, weaving is done in the looms as per normal process like any other material.

Banana Fiber: A revolution in textiles In the year of 2015 this article, a revolution in
textiles is composed of different product using of the banana stem. According to Avneet Kaur,
that the use of banana stems as a source of fiber declined after other convenient fibers such as
cotton and silk became popular. But in recent years the commercial value of banana fiber has
increased and it is used all over the world for multiple purposes from making tea bags and
sanitary napkins to Japanese yen notes and car tires. Avneet Kaur writes about the story of
banana fibers, explaining in detail its use in ancient times, its characteristics, the extraction
process and the possible uses of the eco-friendly fibers in the textile industry. Organic banana
fiber is used to make various eco-papers like tissue, filters and currency paper. Being natural,
heat resistant, having good spinning ability and high tensile strength, it is used for making yarn,
fabrics and garments. It can be blended with other fibers. Eco-friendly bags are made from
banana fibre. Banana fibre paper can be a substitute for polythene bags. It has high nutrition
content to nurture the growth of plant/crops. It increases production or yield and gives organic
output, which is very beneficial As mentioned by in this theory, there are many different kinds
of uses of banana stems such as cotton, silk and even eco bags. But in later a long time the
commercial esteem of banana fiber has expanded and it is utilized all over the world for
numerous purposes from making other stuffs like tea bags and sanitary napkins etc. In this
theory the researchers aim to know what is the main purpose of the banana stem in our
economy. Also, this theory helps to know the different products that can make of in banana
stem. It is similar in the article suggested of in the handmade paper from waste banana fiber,
Banana fiber is a natural fiber with high strength, which can be blended easily with cotton fiber
or synthetic fiber to produce composite material. In the fiber extraction process, a substantial
number of lignocellulosic wastes is generated, disposal of which creates problem in the
adjacent area. In this paper, extracted banana fiber (EBF) and waste banana fiber (WBF) were
characterized in terms of chemical and morphological properties to produce handmade paper.
WBF was characterized with lower α–cellulose, lignin content and longer fiber length (Arafat
et.al, 2018)

Review of Literature
This chapter presents the related literature of what are advantages of using Banana
fibers as Eco bag and the importance of Eco bag in replacing the plastic bags. Eco Bags is a type
of shopping bag that can be reused several times. Single-use paper or plastic bags are an
alternative. It is often a tote bag made from cloth such as cotton, natural fibers such as Jute,
woven synthetic fibers or a dense plastic which is more durable than disposable plastic bags,
allowing multiple use. (Debbie Meyer, 2018) According to Saraexim (2016) Reusable shopping
bags are safer than plastic bags. Such bags are used to avoid waste from the environment.
Products used to make these bags don't affect the nature of our community. Such bags are
generally made of jute, cotton, and recycled plastics. Bio cotton or canvas. These reusable bags
are hygienic, and are easy to wash. Banana fiber is a raw bast fiber that has a wide range of
uses in the production of handcrafted goods, such as matting, rope and twines, but only 10% of
its pseudo stem is used to make products and the remaining waste is used as fertilizer.
(Vigneswaran et al., 2015) Eco bags not only recycle material that would be going to waste,
they also eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags that have proven to harm the
environment. Made from petroleum, plastic bags fuel extraction of fossil resources. Non-toxic
Eco bags, on the other hand, conserve the environment by harmlessly biodegrading after
numerous uses. (unfccc.int, 2019) According to phys.org (2019), Nearly 48 million shopping
bags are used every day across the Philippines, totaling more than 17 billion a year. Though
there are 3r's system and various activities to eliminate plastic, countering these plastic waste is
not yet enough. That's why we come up with an idea for Eco bags because this is the best
plastic bag option.
