Performance Task Assignment - DRAFT

EDUC 3604 - Evaluation of Student Learning

Christina Chin and Olivia Parent

Grade:11
Course: Art 20
GLE’s: DRAWINGS
SLE’s: Record - DRAW FOR CONFIDENCE AND CONSOLIDATION OF HEAD-TO-HAND
SKILLS.
Concepts A. Sketching and composing skills can be developed by drawing from
representational sources

Differentiation: In this task students are provided with the choice of the image they will draw.
They can assess their skill level as well as discuss with the teacher if they think an image will
work. The assignment will be discussed in detail with the class, as well as the task overview
handout being provided. Assistance with the gridding can also be provided during class time, as
well as any other insights that are necessary.

Additional Comments: During image selection, monitoring the students choices would be
beneficial. All National Geographic Magazines provided for student use should be checked over
to make sure that there is no inappropriate content. Furthermore, discussions with students
about different cultures and being sensitive to other ways of life should take place, to ensure
students are respectful towards imagery.
Task Overview Worth: 10%

You will select one image from a National Geographic magazine that takes up at least ¾ of the
page. This image must be a landscape of any environment, and include at least one living
element in the form of people, animals, fish, etc. Using the gridding technique that we went over
in class, copy your image by creating a 2 by 3 grid, making for 6 squares in total. If your image
is highly detailed, you can choose to make more grid squares.
The purpose of this task is to coordinate what you see with what you draw by having you look at
the small parts that make up the big picture. The process is intended to have you focus on one
grid square at a time. This means that one square should be finished before moving onto the
next. You will be provided 2 classes to complete this assignment and can take it home to work if
necessary.

Image Requirements:
● At least ¾ of the page
● A landscape image
● Include at least one living element (people, animals, etc.)

Materials:
● Pencils ranging from at least 4H at the lightest with a 2B or 4B for the darker areas.
● Stonehenge drawing paper (sizing optional- no smaller than 8 ½ by 11)
● Ruler for gridding
● X-Acto Knife (provided)
● Chosen image from National Geographic magazine (the magazines will be provided)
● Kneaded eraser
● OPTIONAL- Additional materials as preferred (i.e. coloured pencils, paints, etc.)

Reminders:
● Please use a ruler and X-Acto knife to remove image from magazine to ensure lines are
straight!
● It is important to measure your image beforehand to ensure that all of the squares are
the same size and will match up with your image. Using a ruler is key! Analyze your
image to determine if it will be beneficial to make more squares, remember, the smaller
the squares the easier it can be to focus in on the details.
● Write down the photographer, people in the image, and location if provided. As an artist,
we always want to credit our sources!
