Disc #2 Plagiarism
Plagiarism is basically copying and pasting someone else’s work with the intent of
claiming it as your own work. According to the Merriam- Webster dictionary to "plagiarize"
means, "to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one's own, to use another's
production without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, and to present as new and
original an idea or product derived from and existing source" (n.d., 2017). This is considered an
act of fraud, according to U.S. law “the expression of original ideas is considered intellectual
property and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions” (n.d., 2017). Plagiarism
is found most in schools since the majority of course work is in written form in order to express
student comprehension of the material. Most research is now being done via the internet with all
the information needed at our fingertips, students should pay close attention when using online
resources.
Why should students especially pay attention to avoiding plagiarism? Plagiarism “is
considered a form of cheating, the Office of the Dean of Students can punish students who
plagiarize with course failure and suspension” (n.d.). This could lead to loss of scholarships,
financial aid, and could even result in a student being expelled from the University. The lesser of
these percussions might be a failing grade on that particular assignment however a failing grade
on one major assignment will most likely lead to a failing grade in that course. It is important to
remember to use your own words as must as possible and only use quotes from others' works to
support your own statements and claims. Above all make sure to properly cite all quotes taken
material has been borrowed and providing your audience with the information necessary to find
that source” (n.d., 2017). When gathering sources from the internet make sure you avoid online
plagiarism by citing the website or author of the article used. There are also tools that can assist
students to ensure that their works are 100% plagiarism-free like Turnitin.com or Easybib.com.
These websites are great tools to use if unsure about the use of citations or to just double check
your work.
