PROJECT SUMMARY

Introduction

A toilet facility is a small room used privately accessing water closet and urinals

for urination and defecation. Toilet facility or toilet rooms usually include sink or lavatory

with soap for hand washing, as this is significant for personal hygiene. Communal toilet

facility is a facility shared by a group of household in a community. For a small

community having a toilet facility combine with a septic system is vital. The facility

ensure proper disposal of waste, and the system will convey the waste with treatment up

to its disposal. The communal toilet facility and septic system shall promote proper

hygiene and sanitation and improve the lives of the people in proposed location of the

project.

Project Location

The City of Batangas is a coastal city lying in a cove like shape at the south-

eastern portion of Batangas Province and geographically situated at coordinates

13°45’25.96” N 121°3’29.2” E. It is bounded on the northwest by the municipality of San

Pascual; on the north by the municipality of San Jose; on the east by the municipality of

Ibaan, Taysan and Lobo; and on the south by the Batangas Bay. Batangas City, the

Capital of Batangas Province has a total area of more or less 28,541.44 hectares with

one hundred five (105) barangay with a population of 318,750. One of the main

barangay in Batangas City is Barangay Libjo (13°73’51”N 121°06’50”S see in Figure 1

below) with a land area of 472.430 hectares and a population of 12,190 according to

2015 census. The barangay is subdivided into ten (10) sitio and has eight (8) major sitio

including Lamao, Central, New San Vicente, D’ Hope, Tangisan, Callejon, Takad and

Born Again Badjao Community in Sitio Callejon, Libjo Batangas City is a

developing community for Badjao from different parts of Mindanao. The community

started last December 14, 1999 when God sent an independent missionary couple to

minister to the Badjao people living on the island of Malitam near the coast of Batangas

City and in Sitio Callejon in Libjo. Pastor Albert and Sister Ellen Santiago have lived with

the Badjao’s for more than fifteen (15) years preaching the Gospel through providing

love, care, education, medical help, and food and assistance in every way to help the

people. The location of Born Again Badjao Community is shown in Figure 2.

The community has a population of 60 persons and an estimated land area of

2550.75 m2 or .26 hectares composed of fifteen (15) households and a church, fourteen

(14) of the households are the Badjao families. For further development of the

community they need proper drainage for storm water and mostly proper toilet and

septic system. Every household in Born Again Badjao Community has its own toilets and

septic tanks. Their toilets/comfort room is made of recycled woods with an improvised

septic tank shown in Figure 3. The existing toilet and septic tank is not advisable to use

because it can be a source of contamination and risk to the health and safety of the

community.

Descriptive Definition of the Project

A communal toilet facility is a room or a small building primarily use for

defecation and urination in a community. Toilet facilities are composed of fixtures such

as (1) water closet, (2) hose bib, and (3) lavatory. The proposed design has two

separate facilities for male and female. There are three lavatories, three water closet,

three hose bib, and slop sink in the male toilet whereas in female toilet has three water

closet, three lavatories, three hose bib and a slop sink. The proposed design also have a

septic system the will convey and treat the wastewater prior to its disposal. The septic

system is composed of septic tank with two types of chambers the (1) digestion chamber

and (2) leaching chamber. The project has an area of 24 m2 with the dimensions of 6m x

4m. It also has a rainwater harvesting system that will be an alternative source of water

supply for the facility.

Goals and Objectives

The general objective of the project design is to provide an attainable communal

toilet facility and septic system in Born Again Badjao Community. The project design

may serve as reference for the future development of the community in particular is

aims:

1. To be able to design a communal toilet facility and septic system in Born Again

Badjao Community with the following consideration:

1.1. Population of the community

1.2. Volume of wastewater generated

1.3. Land Area

1.4. Location of the proposed project

2. To be able to present the following submittals:

2.1. Work Schedule

2.2. Plan and Specification

2.3. Bill of Material and Cost Estimate

Design Scope and Delimitation

The communal toilet facility and septic system has three (3) design options

namely design 1 (the communal toilet facility with septic system) and design 2 (a typical

design of toilet for every household with centralize septic system) and design 3

(communal toilet and bath with septic system) for better comparison. The design option

covered only sanitary engineering consideration such as water supply, sewage and

wastewater disposal, and environmental impacts and mitigating measures.
