Purpose of this document

This supplementary report to the CEP buyers’ guide to multislice CT scanners [1]
provides comparative information for the clinical applications software available with
each fixed diagnostic CT scanner (of 16 slices and above) that is currently on the UK
market.
Clinical applications software packages are available for different clinical tasks, and
vary in complexity from the standard 2D reconstructions, which are available on the
scanner console, to more complex 3D reconstructions which are usually carried out
on an ancillary workstation. With the advent of multi-slice CT and volumetric
datasets, the 3D workstation has become an essential component of the CT system.
The range of clinical applications software is extensive, and that of greater
complexity is purchased optionally.
Comparative specifications are also available for the scanners themselves, as shown
below.

At the time of writing, there are four manufacturers of medical CT scanners selling
systems in the UK. Philips Medical Systems failed to provide information in time for
inclusion in this report.
