The Two Popes (2019)

Ratzinger - Pope Benedict and Bergoglio - Pope Francis

Behind the Vatican walls, Pope Benedict and the future Pope Francis must
find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.

There are vast differences between the two main characters in the movie.
I could say they are polar opposites with each other. In the election scene, we
could see Ratzinger assessing his about to be competitors for the papacy while
Bergoglio kept denying and saying that he's not fit to be a Pope. Ratzinger was
seriously campaigning for other cardinals to vote for him while Bergoglio was
pushing his fellow cardinals to vote for Martini. Bergoglio lives and dresses simply.
He refused to live in the official palace for cardinals because, for him, it's too
grand. He even prefers to be just a simple parish priest than to be a pope. He
does things like what ordinary people do and not let himself be treated
differently or in a special way. He has good humor and provides sensible points
in their arguments. Ratzinger lives strictly by the rules of the church, and the ones
he set for himself. At times he can be close-minded, especially in hearing other's
opinions and is quite serious.
In terms of their vision, Pope Benedict ardently supports the established
and accepted doctrine and beliefs by the Church for hundreds of years
already, while Pope Francis is preaching a more humanistic approach in
religion. How they view abortion, gay marriage, children's abuse is also different.
Benedict views the issues as a political effort to hinder people's beliefs. Francis
sees this as a battle of human selfishness.
