Guide Start
What is a Slicer?
A slicer contains buttons for all the items in a
specific field for a PivotTable or PivotChart.
Clicking on one of the buttons will filter the report
for the selected item.
These are slicers.

The pivot table to the right contains two slicers;

one for the Category field and one for the
Subcategory field of the pivot table.

Go to Step 1

Step 1: Basic Filtering

Click on "Drinks" in the Category slicer to filter the
PivotTable. This will filter the PivotTable and only
the rows for Drinks will be displayed.

Items related to Drinks will be displayed at the top

of the Subcategory slicer.

Now click on the "Coffee" button in the

Subcategory slicer.

The PivotTable is now filtered and only displays

rows that contain "Coffee" in the Subcategory
field.

Go to Step 2
Step 2: Filtering Subcategories
Now click on "Apples" in the Subcategory slicer.
The pivottable should be blank now and not
displaying any data. What happened???

This happended because the Category slicer is still

filtered for "Drinks". Nothing matches the current
filter criteria since "Apples" are NOT related to
"Drinks" in the data set.

You must click the Clear Filter button in

Category slicer to clear the filter. Now the
PivotTable will be filtered for "Apples". You can
also click "Fruit" in the Category slicer.

Go to Step 3

Step 3: Multiple Filters

Multiple filters can be selected in one slicer. Hold
down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and left-click
"Carrots" with the mouse.

"Apples" and "Carrots" should now be selected in

the Subcategory slicer.

You can also use the Shift key to select a range of

items in the slicer.

This should give you a basic understanding of how

to use slicers. Please see the video at
ExcelCampus.com for more details.
