Before sewing can begin, pattern pieces must be made, layouts determined, and fabric cut. In less automated companies,
cutters may use electric knives or cutting machines to cut pattern pieces. In more automated facilities, markers
electronically send the layout to a computer-controlled cutting machine, and textile cutting machine setters, operators, and
tenders monitor the machine's work. Cutters and trimmers take the patterns and cut out material, paying close attention
to their work because mistakes are costly. Following the outline of the pattern, they place multiple layers of material on the
cutting table and use an electric knife or other cutting tools to cut out the various pieces of the garment; delicate materials
may be cut by hand. In some companies, computer-controlled machines do the cutting. Most production workers are
trained on the job. Although a high school diploma is not required, some employers prefer it. Basic math and computer
skills are important for computer-controlled machine operators. Cutters and pressers are trained on the job, while
patternmakers and markers usually have technical or trade school training. All of these workers must understand textile
characteristics and have a good sense of three-dimensional space. Traditional cutters need exceptional hand-eye
coordination. Computers are becoming a standard tool for these occupations because patternmakers and markers
increasingly design pattern pieces and layouts on a computer screen. New entrants seeking these jobs should learn basic
computer skills. Those running automatic cutting machines could need technical training, which is available from vocational
schools.
mark the size, sewing information and codes on the fabric or worksheet
cut fabric by hand, with electric hand-held cutting machines or by using computer-controlled equipment
bundle pieces of fabric together and store them in order of size and colour.
The work of clothing marker/cutters may be two separate jobs, especially in larger clothing factories, where the marking
is often done on a computer. Alternatively, cutting may be a minor part of the job if the company is small.
Skills and knowledge
computer skills, including the ability to use computer-aided design (CAD) software.
Responsibility:
* Have to check all cutting tools physically before start working to know their efficiency.
* Cutting department always has to follow factory planning department’s instruction. So, every day they should analyze
production planning report and emphasize on their guidelines.
* Have to count number of layers with layer paper carefully before start cutting.
* Some fabric yarn construction and context is smooth, but some are stiff or slippery. Have to understand fabric nature by
hand feeling to erase shrinkage or other hassles.
* Should collect approved sample which style is going to cut to protect any fabric item or garments part missing.
* Before insert to the spreading machine talk about the problems with supervisor or concern person if require.
* Remember if any mistakes happen during working hour, cutting team has to liable that negligence. So beware and check
every step physically.
* End of the day evaluates daily performance and has to fix tomorrow’s goal.
Duties:
* After cutting each machine should be clean well.
* Cutter should be alert so that not to fall any dirt on the floor during cutting.
* Cut panel numbering and bundling have to finish carefully and dispatch quickly.
* Sometimes they have to replace sewing reject, printing reject or re-cut short quantity.
* If any mistakes happen during cutting, please notice it to the supervisor at once.
* Remember everybody should work efficiently and finish their task perfectly to expedite production.
Factories cannot be run and production output may not be smooth if cutting department not performs well because cutting
department is feeding point of any apparel industry. So production authority always emphasizes cutting departments need
and should provide them modern equipment and introduce them update techniques so that they can perform well.
A fabric cutter uses a pattern and cuts out the pieces of fabric to be made into clothing or other textiles.
The Work
preparing the fabric for cutting out by spreading it out in flat layers, smoothing out creases and checking the fabric for
faults
planning how much to cut from a piece of material so that there is not much waste
cutting round the pattern using a computer controlled cutting machine, scissors or a special electric knife
cutting as many as 150 layers of fabric at once, if you use a cutting machine
Conditions
You will be doing a lot of bending, stretching and lifting. You will have to lift heavy rolls of fabric from stockrooms.
You may use computer controlled cutting equipment and sharp tools.
follow instructions
work as part of a team with others such as designers, machinists and technologists.
Responsible for understanding the fabric, pattern, fabric defects and all pre - cutting activities.
Effectively and efficiently monitor the entire activities of the Cutting Department.
Responsible for fabric consumption.
Responsible for bulk cutting and necessary pattern changes if required.
Cutting production planning, scheduling, balancing, bottleneck management
Meeting production targets and delivery deadlines
Training and development of staff, multi-skilling, motivation
Quality garment cutting to specifications and standards
Responsible for spreading process, fabrics, cutting internal control.
Quality control workers test, weigh, measure and inspect raw materials, parts, products or processes for defects
and deviations from stated specifications.
They often use measuring instruments and create records of their findings.
Quality control employees also analyze data and make computations to determine test results.
Quality control workers label, segregate, discard or reject items that fail to meet specifications in accordance
with their firm's procedures.
They notify supervisors or other personnel of product and production problems and help with solving them.
