Dear Creators of Social Networks,

Why and how have you created such a beautiful, yet disastrous thing? Did you even

realize the impact this would have on our society and all of the everyday users? Social

networking is a newer thing because of the new technology of the internet. Since this is such a

new topic, people don’t see the dangers in it and the problems it is causing in people all around

the world.

There are many good things that have come from what you have created. These websites and

apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. This technology allows good things

like communicating to happen with people all across the world, spreading information lighting

fast. These networks can be used by law enforcement to catch criminals, communicate with your

family across the world, study for a big test, empower and advertise businesses, help people find

future careers, and so much more. According to procon.org, it is also said that voting

participation has also increased for our elections because it is easier and faster now to register

and vote online. There are so many great things that have come from social networking, but like

most things, with the good comes the bad.

Although social networking has created so many amazing things and made many other tasks so

much easier, there are also many negatives that seem to be taking over our world. Some of these

things include becoming addicted to these platforms, increasing depression rates as well as

disorders. Most of our nation will wake up in the morning, and the first thing they do is look at

their phones, myself included. Many others in our nation can’t even perform simple tasks like

eating without scrolling through a social media website or watching the newest youtube videos.

It has become an addiction and has become too much of many people’s lives, enough that it is

becoming a problem. While using these sources can be good, they can also spread things such as

false information so fast, causing some people's lives to be ruined. Some other problems include

a lack of privacy and so many other things that I don’t think were intended and people aren’t

getting enough education on.

This is a serious and rising problem everywhere that people have access to the internet. We all

need to bring more awareness to the dangers of social networking.

I know you guys are making all of the money from these networks you have created. You don’t

want to change anything and deter people from these technologies because you are successful

from it. You have all put so much work into these elements and even though you know they are

having some bad impacts, I can see why you wouldn’t want to help this cause. It’s almost the

same as tobacco, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and all of those companies. These companies know that

it’s not good for people to be using their products. It has literally been proven to kill people, but

these companies are successful and making profits. They’re not going to stop people from

buying and using their products because it’s benefiting their companies. Many also use the

excuse, “well we aren’t forcing them to use our product.” It’s an addiction. People know it’s bad

for them, but they can’t stop and the companies aren’t going to go to extreme measures to help

them stop because it is benefiting them.

This is in many eyes, the same thing. I know, those are all considered “drugs” so you might think

that is unnecessary to compare, but the social networking you all created is also a drug. We can’t

just focus on the positive side and ignore the bad anymore. We need to educate people on the

dangers of these and try to limit use for their safety before things keep getting worse.

Now I know that social networking isn’t all bad. There are many great things to it and it is very

beneficial if used right. But the way many people are using it is not right. They are doing things

such as binging and having that addiction craving. I am not saying that we need to completely

eliminate these websites and never have anyone use any kind of social networking. It is like all

things and good in moderation. Technology as a whole has become a major problem because of

the increase in the new internet and all of our new technology. It would be a great start to start

here, as social networking is a close second to new technology as a whole.

So is it worth all of the money and fame you guys are getting for the effect these networks are

having on the world. Mark Zuckerberg, Kevin Systrom, Evan Spiegel to name a few. You are all

so successful, but what are you going to do now that what you have created has become a small

part of a big and growing problem?
