President’s Message

Finally, we have some good solid ice and can get
our wheelhouses out! Ours has been out for a
couple weeks but we haven’t gotten any fish to
speak of, but I know at least a few that have had
some success. As I write this, we are “hunkering
down” for the next round of snow, so I’m not sure
when we’ll be able to get out again.
Few things inspire as much spirited discussion
as spraying for curly leaf pondweed (CLP) on our
lake, which is why we committed at our visioning
session last year to keep you posted. So I’m
going to give you some FACTS that you can
know, in order that the many ridiculous rumors
that are floating around can be squashed. We’ll
assume the lake area is 2,125 acres. Some places
say a few more, some a few less, but for discus-
sion lets use that number. In 2018 we sprayed
0 acres, in 2019 we sprayed 12 acres, and in 2020
it will be less than 5 acres. As a percent of lake
area that would be 0% in 2018, 0.565% (less than
1%) in 2019, and less than 0.235% in 2020.
Please see map on bottom of page 6. We spray
very targeted areas, specifically for CLP, and
NOT the native weeds - despite the malicious
rumors. We do an extensive survey each year,
which is always posted on our website, in order
to determine the areas of concentration. We then
go through a process of approvals and permits to
arrive at how much if any of an area will actually
be treated.
We’re so excited to announce that on June 13,
2020 at Greystone Golf Club we’ll be holding our
1st Annual Golf Outing to help raise funds for
the various projects we work on. That would
include protection from invasive species, carp
removal and control, education, newsletters...all
the things we do. We already have some hole
sponsors, and details are starting to come
together so watch our Facebook Page and website
WINTER EDITION 2020
(www.bsla.org) for details. This will be a 9-hole
scramble style event, with a meal following both
for the golfers and those who chose not to golf.
I’m sure you’ve noticed before, but if you haven’t
you hopefully will now, that our membership also
includes some businesses that support Big Sauk
Lake Association. Please help us show our
appreciation for their support by patronizing this
businesses whenever possible. We all join
together in desiring to protect and preserve this
resource, so we might as well just help each
other be successful!

volunteer’s rope, was invented by Pietro Angelo Secchi, an Italian Jesuit priest in "!
1865. In fact, the story goes, he first deployed the instrument into the waters

of the Mediterranean, dropping the disk in over the side of the papal yacht.

While water clarity measurements undoubtedly pre-dated Secchi by many,
many years, he was the first to standardize the procedure and, crucial to anyone’s (

scientific legacy, publish his results. hence, we now use a disk named after him '
to this day. &
The disc is mounted on a pole or line, and lowered slowly down in the water. %
The depth at which the disk is no longer visible is taken as a measure of the
$
transparency of the water.

Secchi disk measurements have been an integral component of Minnesota’s
lake water quality assessment programs for some time; lake residents make peri- "

odic measurements and submit their readings to state and local agencies. The !
aggregated information is used to reveal general trends in water quality.

New technology exists that can provide more accurate water clarity readings
but, since people have been using Secchi disks for 150 years, continuing the ,-./0123,451,677041863945:,1;</=
practice allows us to track water clarity trends over long periods of time. Plus, "!
since anyone can use a Secchi disks, Pietro Angelo’s namesake device is now in *
the hands of citizen scientists across the globe.

 The Sauk Centre Conservation Club will
be having their 4th Annual Fishing
Tournament on June 6, 2020. Send off
will be at 7:00 AM from the Sauk Centre
City Park. The National Anthem will be
played prior to send off. This will again
