Berlandieri x Riparia Kober 5 BB

Synonyms: Cober 5 BB, 5 BB.

It was created in 1904 in Austria by selection from seedlings from free pollination of Vitis Berlandieri and
Vitis Riparia

The opening eye is red and pubescent.

The crown of the young shoot is closed, green, with bronze o- , red tint, pubescent. Young leaflets are
three-lobed, not dissected , with sharp teeth on the tops of the blades, of bronze color, pubescent on
both sides of the leaf, slightly folded along the central vein, Fig. 5.

The young shoot is colored on the lit side, in the upper part it has a cobwebly pubescence , in the middle
and lower part - naked. Matured shoots of strong growth with long internodes, less flattened than the
CD4, grayish to richnevy. Eyes are small, sharp.

The formed leaf is large, almost rounded, dense, leathery, dark green, flat, slightly wrinkled. Three
blades stand out due to elongated sharp teeth with a wide base. Lateral denticles with convex and even
sides, very low, white dots on the tips of denticles. Petiole short, painted, at the base of the central
veins also painted in wine-red color. Petioles notch wide open with a rounded bottom, lyre-shaped or in
the form of an incoming angle. The flower is functionally female. The berries are small, round, black,
juicy. The bunch is small, loose, cylindrical- conical .

Resistance to fungal diseases and root phylloxera is high. Young leaves in the upper part of the shoot are
affected by the leaf form of phylloxera by 3-3.5 points.

The cultivar is high-tech, produces few shoots, and a small number of powerful stepsons are formed on
the shoots. Even in the absence of the proper amount of maintenance work, the yield of cuttings
suitable for vaccination is quite high. In Novocherkassk, with a planting area of 2 x 3 m, the yield of
standard cuttings suitable for grafting is 75–80 thousand / ha.

The disadvantages of the variety include such features as a long growth of shoots and a long growing
season. Volumetric core adversely affects the process of fusion inoculation. A stamp formed from this
stock often thickens more slowly than a graft variety. Long-term observations have shown that with
varieties of European-Amur origin, the Kober 5BB stockstock produces highly productive, but more
sparse grafted stands, than 101-14 rootstock.

Stockstock OPPENHEIM SO-4 .

(clonal selection of Berlandieri x Riparia Teleki 4B)

[wine growing school in Oppenheim, Germany]

Synonyms: Berlandieri x Riparia CO 4 , CO-4, Oppenheim-4 breeding.

Oppenheim CO-4 is a common stock grape variety.

The opening eye is white-pink, highly pubescent. The crown of the young shoot is bronze, with a strong
cobwebly pubescence . Young leaves (the first two) are bronze, with a strong cobwebly pubescence ,
with edges bent downwards, whole, oblong. Subsequent leaves often have underdeveloped lobes,
green with a slight bronze tint. The pubescence is gradually thinning. The axis of the young shoot is
ribbed, powerful, long, dark red on the sunny side with dark purple knots and brownish green on the
shaded, slightly pubescent. An annual matured shoot of medium thickness, slightly flattened (index 1.2),
with long internodes (14 cm): light gray, medium density. The ratio of core to wood is 0.8. The eyes are
dome-shaped, medium size. The grape leaf is large, wedge-shaped, slightly dissected (three-lobed) or
whole. The leaf blade is slightly corrugated , with old leaves folded inwards (by boat). The upper surface
is dark green, with a rare cobwebly pubescence , the lower glabrous Chereshkovaya notch is wide open,
with a rounded bottom, lyre-shaped or in the form of the Latin letter V. The teeth at the ends of the
blades are sharp, oblong. The teeth along the edge of the leaf blade are low, alternating very small with
larger ones . Petiole of leaf thick, purple, with a rare cobwebly pubescence shorter than the midrib;
there is a pink dot at the attachment site. The flower is male. Very few inflorescences form on vine
bushes.

The leading signs of the Oppenheim SO-4 grape variety: large bushes with long, creeping, even, gray
shoots; leaf blade dark green, large, flat, with deep grooves along the veins; petiole recess vaulted, with
a rounded bottom, sometimes with one-sided veining. No clusters form on the bushes (unlike the
Berlandieri x Riparia Kober 5BB variety).

Agrobiological characteristics. The duration of the period from the beginning of bud blooming to leaf fall
(or until the first freeze) is on average 179 days with an average sum of active temperatures of 3270 ° C.
The end of the shoots and the beginning of their ripening occurs 6-8 days later than in the variety
Riparia x Rupestris 101-14, but it is more intense.

The growth power of grape shoots is very large, the average shoot length is about 5 m. The bushes are
powerful, - the total amount of annual wood at the end of the growing season is 1500-1900 cm3. The
vine in Oppenheim CO-4 ripens by 80-90%. Little stepson and shoots are formed. The root system is
powerful, well-branched, penetrates the soil to a depth of 2 m.

The grape variety Oppenheim CO-4 has a high resistance to mildew, oidium, and root form phylloxera
(4.7 points). The leaf form of phylloxera is damaged to an average degree in years especially favorable
for the insect.

The winter hardiness of the eyes is high (their maximum death reaches 8.6%), the frost resistance of the
roots is somewhat reduced. Drought tolerance is average. The variety is relatively resistant to chlorosis -
tolerates 17% of active lime (according to Druino- Gale).

It is well established on all soils suitable for viticulture, including the poor.

Features of agricultural technology. Two fragments are required, 3-4 pinching of shoots with the
removal of inflorescences and antennae. The formation is recommended capitate, leaving 10-12 two-
eyed horns and 20-24 green shoots. Supports - vertical 4-6-wire high trellis. Planting density - 2000
bushes per hectare.

Economic characteristic: the yield of standard (0.5 m high) cuttings is 50-70 thousand / ha and higher
when cultivated on a T-shaped trellis, and on a high vertical one - 150-200 thousand / ha.
Cuttings root well: the yield of root seedlings averages 50% or more. Rootstock grows well together with
European grape varieties; contributes to a significant increase in yield, winter hardiness of the eyes and
shoots, an increase in the average mass of bunches and berries without compromising on quality;
improves plant nutrition; provides good survival and longevity of the bushes. Positive economically
important properties of the variety allow us to recommend it for use in hybridization in order to create
more advanced stocks. It is distinguished by the powerful development of the aboveground and
underground parts of the bushes, it is labor-intensive with high and stable productivity. Young root-
growing bushes in the second or third year enter into the vulture . The bushes grafted on Riparia x
Rupestris CO 4 develop quickly and enter fruiting early. This stock grape variety is demanding on the
conditions of vaccination stratification. Rich, carbonate soils are suitable for it, grows with less tall
varieties with a smaller feeding area.

[Millard and de Grasse , France]

Synonym: 101-14

Riparia x Rupestris 101-14 - formerly widespread grape stock. The created variety was not sufficiently
selected and therefore found in stands as a mixture of clones.

The opening eye is light green. The crown of the young shoot is yellowish-green, with a slight
pubescence . Young leaves are wedge-shaped, bent in the form of a groove, yellowish-green with
reddish edges and pale pink veins, whole. The teeth are pointed, with yellowish ends. The axis of the
young shoot is light brown with a reddish tinge on the sunny side, slightly pubescent. An annual
matured shoot of medium thickness, almost round (index 1.1), with medium internodes (10-11 cm),
smooth, brown with a dark cherry hue. Vine medium density, the ratio of core to wood 0.9. The eyes of
the variety are faint, small. A leaf of medium size or large, characteristic of Vitis Riparia , whole, wedge-
shaped. Leaf blade slightly wrinkled, light green; without pubescence . Petiole notch wide-open ,
vaulted. The teeth at the ends of the barely marked blades are elongated at the tip. Edge teeth are saw-
shaped , with an expanded base and white dots on the tops. The lower surface is almost without
pubescence . Petiole is shorter than the middle vein, elastic, furrowed, covered with short and sparse
hairs, reddish-green. The flower is bisexual (often there are variations with functionally female and male
types). The inflorescence is uniaxial, cylindrical. The bunch is small, cylindrical, of medium density. The
berry is black, small, rounded.

Leading grade symptoms

The leading signs of the Riparia x Rupestris 101-14 grape variety are: bushes of medium vigor, with
cranked, erect, dark brown shoots; the leaves are characteristic of riparia - opaque, dull, medium size;
the leaf blade is curved along the central vein by a groove with wide-walled edges raised upward .

Agrobiological characteristics of the variety.

The period from the beginning of the budding of the buds to leaf fall is relatively short. In the conditions
of the south of Ukraine, 170-180 days with the sum of active temperatures 3100-3500 ° С.

Shoots of medium length, uniform thickness, rounded, cut solid, core to wood ratio 0.9. The bushes are
medium-sized, the total mass of annual growth is an average of 1100 cm3. The vine ripens by 80%.
Many bushes, stepsons, inflorescences and bunches are formed on the bushes. The root system is well-
branched, of medium power, less powerful than that of the Berlandieri x Riparia group varieties (СО 4 ,
5ББ, etc.).

Sustainability

The resistance of the variety Riparia x Rupestris 101-14 to fungal diseases (mildew and oidium) is high,
to the root form of phylloxera - very high (5 points); the leaf form phylloxera is very strong, therefore
the variety requires appropriate treatments with insecticides. Frost resistance of the roots and eyes is
very high, drought tolerance is average. The variety is relatively undemanding to soils, withstands up to
9% of readily soluble forms of carbonates (according to Druino- Gale).

Features of agricultural technology stock.

The formation of capitate bushes leaving 8-12 knots ( two-eyed , taking into account angular ), the load
of green shoots is 12-16. The variety is very laborious, requires at least two fragments and 6-8 pinching
with the removal of antennae and numerous inflorescences. Supports - vertical high 4-6-wire trellis.

The economic characteristic.

The yield of rootstock cuttings on a vertical trellis in the conditions of the Odessa region reaches 60-80
thousand / ha. Rooting them good compared to other rootstock varieties of grapes - is the highest.
Riparia x Rupestris 101-14 grows well together with most European grape varieties.

The characteristics of the new rootstocks Andros , Present, Dobrynya and Garant require additions and
refinements. The Andros varieties and the Present of the Novocherkassk All-Russian Research Institute
of Agriculture named after Potapenko are recommended as winter-hardy, more technologically
advanced, more resistant to calcareous chlorosis than the control variety 101-14, and not inferior to it in
quality of intergrowth with grafted varieties. The Dobrynya and Garant rootstock varieties are identified
by the Tairov Institute (Ukraine) for a number of economically valuable
