Purpose : This procedure covers the hydrostatic pressure testing activity of Gate Valves.

Scope : This procedure defines the minimum requirements of testing activity of

Resilient Seated Gate Valves on test bench.

Reference: : API 598, AWWA C509, UL &FM, 04-SAMSS-048

Authority : The AVK Quality Assurance has the authority to change or modify this procedure
Until the final approval from the client/ CSD.

Test Position : 2” to 12” on the Test bench in Horizontal Position and 14” & above with blind flanges in
Vertical position.
All steel valves NPS 6” and larger shall be pressure tested in a horizontal position, i.e., with stem in vertical
position. (Please specify test position for less than NPS 6).

The test bench set up for hydrostatic pressure testing of valves

(as shown in page 3 diagram).

1) Place the Valve ‘V’ on the test bench.

2) Close both ends of the valve ‘V’ by operating hydraulic valve ‘Y’

3) Switch on the pumps and then open valve ‘A’ & ‘E’

Shell Test :

1) Open the valve ‘V’ fully by using hydraulic control valve ‘X’

2) Open valve ‘B’ and close valve ‘C’- fill the valve ‘V’ with water, after filling completely
it rises up and allow water to flow out by operating valve ‘C’ until all air escape out.
Water flows through ‘C’ and drains through the drain spout.

3) Raise the pressure to 2xRWP (500 PSI) the required using pressure regulating valve ‘F’.

4) Clean the external surface of the valve ‘V’ with air, by using air blower.

5) Pressure holding duration according to API 598 - 60 secs for 6" and below,
120 secs for 8" to 12", 300 sec's for 14" and above.

6) Check for pressure drop and any visual leakage in the valve.

7) Drop pressure to zero by closing valve ‘C’.

SEAT TEST - DOWN STREAM:

1) Close valve ‘V’ by using hydraulic valve ‘X’.

2) Allow excess water to drain out completely.

Doc. No. : AVK:TP 00.01 Iss. : 7 Date : 08-05-2016
Prepared by : MV Approved By : BB. Page-2/3

3) Operate valve ‘F’ to raise pressure to 1.5xRWP (375 PSI) the required.

4) Pressure holding duration according to API 598 - 60 secs for 6" and below,
120 secs for 8" to 12", 300 sec's for 14" and above.

5) Clean the external surface of valve ‘V’ with air, by using air blower.

6) Check for pressure drop and visual leakage in the valve.

SEAT TEST –UP STREAM :

1) Close valve ‘B’ and open valve ‘C’

2) Allow excess water to drain out completely.

3) Raise pressure to the required 1.5xRWP (375 PSI) by operating valve

‘F’ (Pressure regulating valve)

4) Pressure holding duration according to API 598 - 60 secs for 6" and below,
120 secs for 8" to 12", 300 sec's for 14" and above.

5) Clean the external surface of valve ‘V’ with air, using air blower.

6) Check for pressure drop and visual leakage in the valve.

7) Drop pressure to zero, by closing valve ‘C’.

8) Open the valve ‘V’ by hydraulic control valve ‘X’

9) Unclamp valve ‘V’ take out the valve and dry it with air blower.

Acceptance criteria : Zero leakage

CALLIBRATION

1. ALL THE GAUGES HAVE A RANGE SUCH THAT THE REST PRESSURE IS WITHIN
20% TO 80% OF THE FULL RANGE.

2. THE GAUGES SHALL BE CALIBRATED BEFORE TESTS AND SHALL BE VALID FOR
SIX MOTNHS.

QC Checks

QC has to do random monitoring of pressure testing to make sure the integrity of testing.
