workbooks) shows the overall structure of XLStatistics, with different workbooks for
analysis of data with different numbers and types of variables. But it is more
convenient to access the workbooks from the XLStatistics menu. To help avoid any
confusion you may wish to hide the Launch-pad by clicking the button labeled 'Hide
Launch-pad' (lower right of window). The XLStatistics menu will remain on Excel's
main menu bar not matter what.
(In Excel 2007 the XLStatistics ribbon replaces the laundpad/menu combination.)

XLStatisticsOverview6-1
For analysis, your data should normally be recorded on a sheet in an Excel file,
organized in a matrix with
- the variables in columns
- each row corresponding to a separate case.
There must be one header row at the top containing the names of the variables.
Variable names can be any character string.
Columns containing numerical variables should contain numbers (though any non-
numbers will be ignored in the analysis).
Columns containing categorical variables can contain any labels - descriptive words
like 'Female' or 'Male' or codes like '0' and '1'.
There is no limit (other than limits imposed by Excel) on the number of columns
(variables) and rows (cases).

Page 17
XLStatisticsOverview7-1
Use your mouse or keyboard to highlight one rectangular block of data, making sure
to cover the variables you wish to analyse and including the header row with the
names of the variables.
The variables you wish to analyse do not need to be in adjacent columns - simply
highlight all intermediate variables as well if they are not. You can highlight whole
columns - XLStatistics will then use the largest rectangular block in the selected
columns that contain data.
You cannot select multiple areas (using Ctrl-click, for example) - only one rectangular
block of contiguous cells can be highlighted.

Ignore any extra variables you may have highlighted in Step 4 above when deciding
what workbook to use - consider only the variables you wish to analyse. After you
have selected the appropriate workbook, the workbook will be opened and the data
linked to it.

to analyse.
If you had highlighted a number of extra variables in Step 4 (other than the ones you
wish to analyse) or if you wish to analyse different variables, use the drop-down boxes
in Row 2 near the top of the Data area to select your variables.

You may need or want to make some adjustments to the provided analyses. Text that
you can safely alter is in blue and there are usually checkboxes, etc, that can be used
to alter the basic analyses that are provided. You may need to alter formatting of cells
(the number of decimals places that are displayed, for example) or charts (to place
legends as you want them, for example).

XLStatistics has separate workbooks for analysis of data comprising variables of these
two types. The workbooks are named according to the number and type of variables
they are intended to analyse, so that the workbook 1Num1Cat, for instance, is
designed for the analysis of data with 1 Numerical variable and 1 Categorical variable.
The workbooks in the set are: 1Num, 1Cat, 2Num, 1Num1Cat, 2Cat, 2Num1Cat,
1Num2Cat, nNum, nNum1Cat, 1NumnCat, nCat. Further help on using each of these
is in the files themselves.

XLStatisticsRecord-1
1. Select a result you wish to save by highlighting it (in the case of cells or tables) or clicking
(in the case of charts)
2. Select Record from the XLStatistics ribbon or menu.
The selected results are copied as pictures to cells in Column A in a sheet named 'XLStatistics
Record' that is added to your original data workbook. You might like to add a brief comment
about each result in the adjacent Column B, or copy the picture from the sheet and paste into
Word for a report.
Many results can recorded onto the same 'XLStatistics Record' sheet. They normally appear in
successive rows in Column A, but actually the XLStatistics Record facility saves the next result
into the first "narrow" row it finds on the 'XLStatistics Record' sheet (a narrow row is one that is
no higher than a row on a normal new Excel sheet). So you can control the order with which
results are saved by inserting narrow rows. You can also group related results on different
sheets - XLStatistics will only record onto a sheet called 'XLStatistics Record'.

The following movie presents a Guide to XLStatistics.
To keep the size of the file as small as possible, the movie was recorded with no audio
(captions only) on a 640 x 480 VGA screen. This is a very small screen by modern standards,
so the toolbars in Excel have been hidden to get as much useable screen area as possible. If
your computer screen is set differently the appearance of Excel and/or XLStatistics may be
slightly different. The movie does not play on a Macintosh, sorry.
The name of the movie file is XLSGuide.scm. It was recorded using Lotus ScreenCam and is
viewed using the ScreenCam movie player (SCPlayer.exe), distributed with XLStatistics. While
the movie is playing, the Lotus ScreenCam window will appear that has some basic controls
