STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

R REPAIR SOURCE APPROVAL (RSA) REQUIREMENTS − REPAIR−01

R Task 70−40−01−380−001:

R 1. Repair Source Approval Requirements (RSA) − Peening

R A. Scope

R (1) This section defines procedures and requirements for

R demonstrating that candidate peening equipment and
R processes (metal shot, glass or ceramic bead) can meet
R the intent of the repair and conform to applicable P&W
R Engine Manual or IEN requirements.

R B. General Regulations

R (1) Repair Source Approval (RSA) Requirements − General

R in 70−40−01, Repair−00 (Task 70−40−01−300−001) is the
R authority for this section.

R C. Qualification Requirements

R (1) Process Sheets

R (a) Process sheets that contain detailed information

R necessary to control the equipment setup and
R processing of parts must be submitted for review.

R (b) Detail must include parameters such as nozzle

R size, angle and distance from part, air pressure,
R part rotation speed, nozzle movement (if any), and
R peening sequence.

R (c) All peening processes must be automated unless

R approved differently by P&W Materials & Processes
R Engineering (MPE).

R (2) Equipment and Related Data

R (a) A brief description of equipment (such as, type,

R model, and shot separation system) must be
R submitted.

R (b) Almen test strip fixture drawing(s) that show

R the relationship between strips and part and
R identifying test strips must be submitted for
R review.

R REPAIR SOURCE APPROVAL (RSA) REQUIREMENTS − REPAIR−01

R (c) Almen test strips, identified by test fixture

R location, peened for the proposed part peening
R time and twice the proposed part peening time must
R be submitted for 10X visual review (Reference AMS
R 2430 specification).

R (d) Almen test strip arc height data, identified by

R test fixture location, must be submitted for
R review.

R (3) Inspection

R (a) Peened part(s) must be submitted for 10X visual

R review.

R (b) A representative of MPE or an authorized delegate

R has the authority to witness the peening process
R upon P&W request.

R D. Significant Process Parameters And Equipment Moves

R (1) Guide to Significant Process Parameters

R (a) The list that follows is a guide to peening

R process parameters which, if varied, could affect
R peening quality and have a harmful effect on the
R quality, durability, or performance of the part.
R The parameters are representative and the list is
R not necessarily complete. It includes:

R 1 Peening time

R 2 Air pressure

R 3 Size and material of peening media

R 4 Number of nozzles

R 5 Location of nozzles relative to part

R 6 Movement of nozzles relative to part

R 7 Movement of part relative to nozzles

R 8 Number and location of test strips.

R REPAIR SOURCE APPROVAL (RSA) REQUIREMENTS − REPAIR−01

R (a) The list that follows is a guide to peening

R process equipment which, if moved, requires RSA
R re−approval because the move could affect peening
R quality and have a harmful affect on the quality,
R durability, or performance of the part. The
R equipment list is representative and is not
R necessarily complete. It includes:

R 1 Robotic peening equipment.

R E. Additional Requirements

R (1) The MPE representative may adjust the qualification

R requirements pending the results of:

R (a) Initial process review

R (b) Part geometry

R (c) Experience of the source that requests RSA

R approval.

R F. Checklist

R (1) The qualification items that follow must be submitted

R to get RSA approval:

R (a) Detailed process sheets

R (b) Equipment description

R (c) Almen test strip setup

R (d) Almen test strips

R (e) Almen test strip arc height data

R (f) Peened part for visual review.
