R VISUAL INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−08

R Task 70−31−00−220−108:

R 1. ROSAN(R)−Type Lock Ring Mating Surfaces − Inspection And Repair

R NOTE: This procedure is for aluminum and magnesium parts only.

R A. General

R (1) Damage frequently occurs to parts at ROSAN(R)−type lock

R ring mating surfaces during installation or removal of
R studs and lock rings.

R (2) Use the inspection and repair instructions in this

R section together with specific Engine Manual or CIR
R Manual instructions, as necessary, to do an inspection
R and repair of parts made or repaired with studs and
R ROSAN−type lock rings.

R B. Procedure

R (1) Inspection (See Figure 801.)

R (a) Examine aluminum and magnesium parts for damage at

R lock ring mating surfaces. (See Figure 801.)

R (b) If parts are unsatisfactory and show damage to

R serrations, repair the parts.

R (2) Repair (See Figure 802.)

R (a) Blend the damage that is within the repair limits

R by SPOP 533. Refer to 70−45−00, SPOP−533 (Task
R 70−45−00−320−004) and do the subsequent steps:

R 1 Do a blend repair on the part to make smooth

R the raised material only.

R 2 It is permitted to blend a maximum of two

R 90−degree arcs (Index 1) for each hole.

R 3 The radial depth of the blend (Index 2) can be

R 1.25 times the radial height of the lock ring
R serration (Index 3).

R 4 The axial depth of the blend into the part at

R the area of damage can be a maximum of 1.25
R times the thickness of the lock ring (Index 4).

R (b) Do the applicable subsequent procedure:

R VISUAL INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−08

R 1 For bare aluminum:

R a Do SPOP 42 − Chromate Conversion Coating Of

R Aluminum (AMS 2473 Or AMS 2474). Refer to
R 70−44−01, SPOP−42 (Task 70−44−01−330−012).

R 2 For bare magnesium:

R a Do SPOP 41 − Chemical Chromate Conversion

R Treatment For Magnesium Alloys (PWA
R 547). Refer to 70−44−01, SPOP−41 (Task
R 70−44−01−330−011).

R (3) Installation (See Figure 803.)

R (a) Install the lock rings and studs by the specific

R Engine Manual or CIR repair instructions. But, it
R is necessary to include these steps:

R 1 It is permitted to rotate the lock rings to a

R maximum of 90 degrees (Index 1) from the
R position of the initial lock ring (Index 1, 2,
R and 3).

R 2 Obey all other requirements of the repair.

R (4) Assembly

R (a) The installed stud must be in compliance with the

R specific assembly torque requirements.

R (b) If parts are not in compliance with assembly

R requirements, then evaluate the parts for possible
R oversize insert and lock ring repair.

R C. Postrequisites

R (1) None
