CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−211

Task 70−21−00−110−008:

1. SPOP 211 − Four−Step Alkaline Rust Remover And Acidic Descaling

(With Inhibited Phosphoric Acid)

WARNING: REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA

SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL'S INFORMATION SUCH
AS: HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL
CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH
HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND
CONTROL MEASURES.

R CAUTION: DO NOT DO THIS PROCEDURE MORE THAN THE SPECIFIED

R NUMBER OF TIMES DURING EACH SHOP VISIT BECAUSE TOO
R MUCH STOCK LOSS CAN OCCUR.

R A. General

R (1) SPOP 211 is a permitted alternative to SPOP 213. Refer

R to 70−21−00, SPOP−213 (Task 70−21−00−110−009).

R (2) Some of the steps in SPOP 211 will degrade or cause

R corrosion of chrome plate, aluminized coatings, and
R thermal spray coatings (for example, flame−sprayed,
R plasma−sprayed, Praxair Flame Plated, and high velocity
R oxy fuel (HVOF) coatings), and will make it necessary
R to replace these coatings.

R (a) Some repairs in the repair section of the Engine

R Manual or Cleaning Inspection and Repair (CIR)
R Manual specify to apply one or more of these
R coatings on parts for which the Cleaning section
R in the Engine Manual or CIR Manual specifies SPOP
R 211.

R 1 To clean parts after such repairs, use only the

R specified cleaning SPOPs that are compatible
R with the applicable coatings unless you will
R replace the coatings. If you will replace the
R coatings, then it is permitted to use SPOP 211
R to clean these parts.

R 2 Refer to the Engine Manual or CIR Manual

R Cleaning section and to Special Cleaning
R Quality Control in 70−20−00, General−01 (Task
R 70−20−00−100−001−003) to find the specified
R cleaning SPOPs that are compatible with the
R applicable coatings.

R (3) It is permitted to interchange the positions of the

R acidic scale conditioner and alkaline permanganate
R steps in the specified sequence of steps in this
R procedure. The chemicals from some suppliers give more
R satisfactory results when the acidic scale conditioner
R and alkaline permanganate steps are in the opposite
R sequence.

R (4) If a part is heavily scaled, remove the part from the

R solution two times maximum during one or more of the
R chemical solution steps in the cleaning cycle, and
R pressure spray rinse the part to remove degraded scale
R before you put the part in the solution again. Make
R sure that the total time in each solution is not more
R than the maximum time specified for that solution.

R (5) Some engines operate at higher temperatures and/or

R operate for more hours and cycles between shop visits
R than past engine models. These operation conditions
R can make the engine parts not easy to clean when the
R solution temperatures and concentrations are near the
R minimum operation limits. This SPOP will clean the
R parts more easily if the solution temperatures and
R concentrations are between the maximum and the middle
R of the specified operation limit ranges.

R (6) Refer to 70−20−00, General−01 for other requirements

R that include:

R (a) Sequence of procedures

R (b) Quality control of equipment and procedures

R (c) Optional procedure parameters.

R B. Procedure

R (1) Use the subsequent procedure to clean the part:

R (a) Remove grease from the part with SPOP 209 if there
R is grease or oil on the part. Refer to 70−21−00,
SPOP−209 (Task 70−21−00−110−041).

R (b) Soak the part in alkaline rust remover solution

(SPS 2, SPS 7, SPS 52, SPS 91, SPS 115, SPS 116,
SPS 129, or SPS 200−2) at 180° − 200°F (82° − 93°C),
for 15 − 30 minutes.

R (c) Pressure spray rinse the part over the alkaline

R solution tank. Use clean cold water.

R (d) Put the part fully in cold water, then remove the
R part from the water and pressure spray rinse the
R part. Use clean cold water.

R (e) Soak the part in one of these acidic scale

R conditioner solutions at the applicable
R temperatures for 15 − 30 minutes:

R 1 SPS 8, SPS 154, or SPS 191 at 175° − 185°F (79°

R − 85°C)

R 2 SPS 130 at 175° − 195°F (80° − 90°C).

R (f) Pressure spray rinse the part over the acidic

R scale solution tank. Use clean cold water.

R (g) Put the part fully in cold water, then remove the
R part from the water and pressure spray rinse the
R part. Use clean cold water.

R (h) Soak the part in alkaline permanganate solution

(PS 227, SPS 13, SPS 15, SPS 16, SPS 114, SPS 202,
SPS 203, or SPS 204) at 180° − 200°F (82° − 93°C)
for 15 − 30 minutes.

R (i) Pressure spray rinse the part over the alkaline

R permanganate solution tank. Use clean cold water.

R (j) Put the part fully in cold water, then remove the
R part from the water and pressure spray rinse the
R part. Use clean cold water.

R (k) Soak the part in inhibited phosphoric acid

solution (SPS 21) at room temperature for 15 − 30
minutes.

R (l) Put the part fully in cold water, then remove the
R part from the water and pressure spray rinse. Use
R clean cold water.

R (m) Do an inspection of the part to make sure that the

R part is clean.

R 1 If the part is not clean, then it is permitted

R to do this procedure again one time only.

R 2 It is permitted to do this SPOP to clean the

R part a maximum of two times during each shop
R visit.

R (n) Put the part fully in hot water at 150° − 200°F

(66° − 93°C) until the temperature of the part is
R approximately the same as the water temperature to
flash dry.

R (o) Apply corrosion inhibitor with SPOP 5, as

necessary. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−05 (Task
70−21−00−110−048).
