STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

Task 70−35−00−220−103:

1. Dimensional Inspection − Antifriction Bearing Inspection

A. Procedure

NOTE: All bearing parts must be at same temperature while

making dimensional inspection. Do not warm parts by
excessive handling.

(1) Under normal conditions of moderate speed and adequate

lubrication, rolling element bearings have little or
no measurable wear. However, jet engine bearings
are subjected to speeds and temperatures higher
than normal and to possible dirt contamination. To
determine amount of wear, it will be necessary to make
dimensional checks noted in following paragraphs.

(2) Bore and OD Measurement. See Figure 801, and 802.

(a) For determining bore diameter, use apparatus for

two−point measuring and take three readings
approximately 120 degrees apart. In measuring
OD, measurement shall be made with bearing in
horizontal position.

NOTE: The maximum gage force of measuring

apparatus may be four ounces.

(b) If out−of−roundness is purposely machined into

a particular bearing, minimum diameter reading
and maximum diameter reading shall be obtained.
Arithmetical average of these readings must be
within limits established in Table of Bearing
Limits which is in Inspection Section of Engine
Manual.

(c) In both measurements, equipment used must be

capable of accurate readings within 0.0001 inch
(0.0025 mm). A dial bore gage, or bore gage, that
uses the air gap principle, can be used to measure
the bearing ID. See Figures 801 and 802. A
fixture employing dial gage or air gap principle
can also be used for OD.

(3) Ball Bearing Contact Angle (See Figure 803 thru Figure
807)

NOTE: This check also applies to both details of a

duplex bearing.

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

R (a) Apply a thin film of PMC 9123 lubricating and

R preservation oil to load the bearing elements of
the bearing. See Figure 804.

(b) Remove unloaded half of inner ring of bearing.

Place bearing on surface plate with loaded half of
inner ring up and X or H marks on inner and outer
races aligned within five degrees.

NOTE: The direction of the inner ring thrust

loading can be determined from the Table of
Bearing Limits. The rear ring of a forward
loaded bearing is the loaded ring.

(c) Place graduated adapter ring (determined from

Table of Bearing Limits) over outer ring of
bearing as shown in Figure 805.

(d) Use any one of the approved temporary marking

methods and combination square with center head
to scribe a line on rear face of ball cage
opposite zero mark on graduated ring. See
Figure 806. Refer to 70−11−00, General−01 (Task
70−11−00−800−001−003).

(e) Align zero degree position on graduated ring with

scribe mark on cage.

(f) Place gage (Figure 803, Index 4) over inner ring

of bearing. Align gage pointer with zero degree
position on graduated ring and scribe mark on
cage.

(g) Place weight (Figure 803, Index 3) on top of gage.

(h) Rotate load clockwise five revolutions to ensure

proper seating of load bearing surfaces. Return
gage pointer to original positions on ring and
cage by rotating load counterclockwise five
revolutions.

(i) Aligning pointer of gage with zero mark of

graduated ring and previously applied mark
on cage, rotate weight clockwise exactly ten
revolutions. See Figure 807.

(j) Read contact angle on scale of graduated ring

opposite mark on cage.

(k) To check reading, rotate load counterclockwise

exactly ten revolutions. Pointer, previous mark
on cage, and ring zero mark should be aligned. If
they are not, do the procedure again.

(4) Ball Bearing Ring Flushness (All Engines Except JT4,

GG4 and FT4) (See Figure 808 thru Figure 819)

(a) Before bearing inspection for ring flushness,

adjust flushness gage and flushness adapter
(Figure 808) for particular bearing in accordance
with the procedure that follows:

NOTE: It is recommended that a scrap bearing

whose intrusion or protrusion is precisely
known, be used as a standard for periodic
check of flushness tooling setup.

1 Set master very carefully onto adapter. See

Figure 809.

2 Position clamp on master, wringing them

together. See Figure 810.

3 Center master and clamp on adapter (Figure

811), wringing together, then set stops.

4 Adjust ball on clamp to approximate height

desired.

5 With specified weight on support rod, carefully

unlock and lower ratio weight arm. See Figure
812.

NOTE: Arm provides a 10 to 1 ratio advantage.

A 250 pound weight will produce a 2500
pound thrust on bearing.

6 Adjust ball on clamp until weight arm level

bubble is centered.

7 Set gage to zero.

8 Release load, then reapply load. Check zero.

9 Raise and lock load.

10 Remove master and clamp carefully so as not to

upset zero setting. The inner plate of adapter
will rise above the outer ring because of
its spring load. This is normal so long as
movement is smooth and spring pressure is not
excessive.

(b) Before making bearing flushness check, lap faces

of bearing inner and outer races on charged cast
iron plate to reduce possible high spots. This
must be done by making approximately four circular
passes for each face.

(c) After lapping races and adjusting fixture, apply

thin film of light oil to internal load bearing
surfaces of bearing, wipe bearing ring faces with
clean, lint free cloth, or paper wiper, and
examine bearings as follows:

1 Place bearing, X−marks aligned within five

degrees and puller groove side up, slightly off
center on adapter. See Figure 813.

2 Position pilot on bearing. See Figure 814.

3 Center bearing and pilot against stops (Figure

815). The X−marks on bearing must be in line
within five degrees before and after seating
balls.

4 Adjust height of ball end in pilot to

approximate position to hold weight arm level
bubble centered.

5 Apply load slowly by releasing lock on weight

arm while wringing outer race to outer ring of
adapter. Rotate pilot back and forth several
times to seat balls.

6 Adjust height of ball end in pilot to bring

weight arm level bubble to center.

7 Seat bearing and pilot by wringing until gage

unit repeats after reapplication of load.

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

8 Readings must be taken at four positions

approximately evenly spaced by removing and
repositioning whole package of bearing and
pilot. Wringing of package and seating of
balls should be done at each location, and in
the same manner so as to be sure you can get
these readings again. Flushness is average of
fluctuation as read on gage. When inner ring
protrudes, flushness (actually, out−of−flush
value) must be designated as plus (+) value;
when inner ring intrudes, values must be
designated as minus (−).

9 Regarding either detail of duplex bearing as

checked on flushness fixture, if bottom surface
of inner ring is lower than bottom surface of
outer ring, this is protrusion. If bottom
surface of inner ring is higher than bottom
surface of outer ring, this is intrusion.

NOTE: Use this procedure to examine both

bearing details.

subtraction) +0.0003
Algebraic difference +0.0001

(d) The flushness of puller groove side of bearing is

a function of puller side flushness and difference
of width of inner and outer rings. If outer ring
is wider, difference is designated as plus (+)
value; if inner ring is wider, difference is
minus (−) value. In figuring puller groove side
flushness, difference in ring widths is added
algebraically to plain side flushness. That is,
add the two values if signs are alike and subtract
them if signs are unlike.

(e) The width of rings is measured in accordance with

Standard Gaging Practices of AFBMA which calls for
measurement in horizontal position supported on
three buttons. This measurement is accomplished
by original inspection in following manner:

NOTE: This check is required for detail number

one members (front only) of duplex No. 2
and No. 4 bearings.

1 Using dial indicator on height gage, zero in

over button. See Figure 817.

2 Transfer setting to built−up gage block or

equivalent.

3 Add width of bearing to gage blocks or

equivalent and again zero in with dial
indicator. See Figure 818.

4 Put ring in horizontal position on the three

buttons. Wring the two halves of inner ring
together and align H−marks within five degrees.

5 With dial indicator and height gage set,

transfer to ring over button (Figure 819), and
take reading while rotating ring. Width of
ring is average of minimum and maximum reading
obtained.

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

(f) The following procedure is an optional method for

measuring the width of duplex bearing inner and
outer rings.

NOTE: This check is required for detail number

one members (front only) of duplex No. 2
and No. 4 bearings.

1 Fabricate hardened and lapped spacer block

approximately 2.5 inches (63.500 mm) by 4.0
inches (101.600 mm) by 2.0 inches (50.800 mm).
Some provision must be made whereby this block
can be bolted or clamped to surface plate.
Upper and lower surfaces must be parallel but
only upper surface must be lapped.

2 Use height gage, surface gage, or any other

suitable measuring device to support dial
indicator. Dial indicator must have good
repeatability characteristics and be graduated
in 0.0001 inch (0.0025 mm) divisions.

3 Slide bearing outer ring over block with

wringing motion. Set dial indicator to zero
and repeat at 120 degree intervals. Record
average readings.

4 Wring inner rings together and slide assembled

part across block at 120 degree intervals.

5 Add or subtract average difference between

bearing rings, if any, to flushness difference.

(5) Ball Bearing Ring Flushness (JT4, GG4, and FT4 Engines
Only). See Figure 808, 820 and 821.

NOTE: Before making bearing flushness check, determine

that no imperfections or protrusions are present
which will affect flushness. Apply very light
film of oil to mating faces of split inner races
and wring parts together. If bottom half of
race can be lifted by picking up upper half,
no lapping will be required. Other bearing
details may be checked by placing them on
dry uncharged lapping plate and moving part.
Slight protrusion will cause noticeable drag.
Lap rings, baffles, and spacers to remove
protrusion, or other slight imperfections, on
dry, charged cast iron plate.

Pratt & Whitney
STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

(a) To ensure both units of a duplex pair bearing

operating as one, when distributing the load
between the units, it is necessary that adjacent
sides of bearings be flush within limits noted in
Table of Bearing Limits. Therefore, forward face
or plain side face of −2 or rear bearing and rear
face or puller groove side of −1 or front bearing
shall be inspected for flushness. Oil baffles and
spacer shall be considered as part of −1 bearing
and inspection shall be made with −1 bearing and
oil baffle and spacer stacked in same manner as
they are assembled in engine.

NOTE: For information purposes only, a flushness

check of the −1 detail of bearing without
baffle and spacer may be made in accordance
with previous steps.

(b) Before inspecting bearing for ring flushness,

flushness gage and flushness adapter (Figure 808)
must be adjusted for particular bearing.

(c) After adjusting fixture, apply thin film of light

oil to internal load bearing surfaces of −2 or
rear bearing, wipe bearing ring races with clean,
lint−free cloth, or paper wiper, and inspect for
flushness of front face.

(d) Flushness is average of fluctuation as read on

gage. In relation to fixture, when checking −2
detail of duplex bearing, if bottom surface of
inner ring is higher than bottom surface of outer
ring, this is intrusion (Ref. 1, Figure 820), a
minus reading on gage. When checking −1 detail
of duplex bearing, if upper surface of spacer is
lower than upper surface of baffle, this is
protrusion (Ref. 2, Figure 820), a plus reading
on gage.

(e) In measuring flushness of rear face of −1 or

forward bearing, a clamp with cone (Figure 821
is used and movable plate of adapter is removed.
Measure flushness in accordance with following
instructions:

1 Remove front inner race of −1 bearing leaving

only the baffle detail of the baffle−spacer
package in position.

2 Place bearing, X−marks aligned within five

degrees and puller groove side up, and the oil
baffle in its proper assembly position slightly
off center of adapter.

3 Set clamp with cone (Figure 821) onto bearing.

Center bearing, baffle, and clamp against
stops, wringing outer race to outer ring of
adapter. Raise upper ball end of clamp to its
approximate position to hold weight arm level.

4 Apply load slowly by releasing lock on weight

arm. Adjust upper ball end to bring level
bubble to center.

5 Set gage to zero.

6 Release load, then reapply load to check zero

setting.

7 Release and lock load.

NOTE: The datum plane (upper plane of baffle)

for checking baffle−spacer flushness has
now been established. The cone tool
depressed the inner movable plate of
the adapter to transmit movement to the
gaging unit.

8 Move bearing baffle and clamp to bench. Remove

baffle and clamp.

9 Position spacer on bearing, aligning X−marks

within five degrees. Set clamp with cone on
bearing and spacer.

10 Center bearing, spacer, and clamp against

stops. The X−marks on bearing must be in line
within five degrees before and after seating
balls.

11 Adjust height of ball end in clamp to

approximate position to hold weight arm level
bubble centered.

12 Apply load slowly by releasing lock on weight

arm while wringing outer race to outer ring of
adapter. Rotate clamp back and forth several
times to seat balls.

13 Adjust height of ball end in clamp to bring

weight arm level bubble to center.

14 Seat bearing and clamp by wringing until gage

until repeats after reapplication of load.

15 Readings shall be taken at four positions

approximately evenly spaced by removing and
repositioning whole package of bearing, spacer,
and clamp. Wringing of package and seating of
balls should be done at each location, and in
the same manner so as to ensure repeatability.

16 Flushness is average of fluctuation as read

on gage. The algebraic difference of this
figure and calculation of −2 bearing flushness
indicates total flushness value.

(6) Adapter Assembly Plate Lapping (See Figure 822 thru

824)

(a) After every 100 bearing measurements, fixed and

movable plates of adapter assembly (Figures 822
and 823) shall be lapped on charged gray cast iron
or MEEHANITE GA 50 plates in accordance with
following procedure:

1 Use three flat plates and lapping compound

consisting of 4 oz (113. g) of PMC 3151
lapping compound to 1 gal (3.79 liter) of
LAP−5−0001−000−0006 Lapping Vehicle or PMC 9201
metal cutting compound.

2 Prepare (make flat) surfaces of plates by

lapping one against other as shown in Figure
824 using above compound. Use only one side of
each plate. Other side is for contact with
bench.

3 Lap plates (as necessary); Use all three plates

approximately an equal amount. Pressure
must be evenly distributed to prevent uneven
lapping.

(7) Ball Or Roller Bearing Internal Radial Clearance (See

Figure 825)

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−03

(a) Bring up lower force strap until it just contacts

outer rings and then back off slightly so that
there is a 0.002 − 0.003 inch (0.051 − 0.076 mm)
clearance between strap and ring. Repeat for
upper strap and outer ring. Avoid contact between
straps and outer ring since any preload will have
a harmfull affect on the measurement. Indicator
point must be put in the center of outer ring, and
indicator adjustment knob must be tight.

(b) With standard radial−play tester (Figure 825)

check radial clearance at three points 120 degrees
apart, using loading specified in Table of Bearing
Limits which is in the Inspection Section of
Engine Manual for each bearing.

(c) For designed out−of−round bearings (No. 5), check

internal radial clearance at four different
circumferential locations every 90 degrees around
outer race. Average of four clearances shall be
within limits given in Table of Bearing Limits
which is in the Inspection Section of Engine
Manual. Maximum permitted difference between
maximum radial clearance and minimum radial
clearance is 0.002 inch (0.051 mm).

(d) If no tester is available, use the clearence check

method that follows:

1 Clamp inner ring to surface plate with shim

between ring and plate. Ordinary writing
paper, 0.002 − 0.003 inch (0.051 − 0.076 mm)
thick, is satisfactory for small bearings; two
or three thicknesses for large bearings.

2 Set up indicator to contact OD of outer race.

3 By exerting even hand−pressure, move outer race

toward and away from indicator. Total amount
of movement as read on indicator is bearing
internal clearance. Reject any bearings with
readings which exceed limits given in Table of
Bearings Limits.

NOTE: This method of measurement may be

accurate only to about 0.0005 inch
(0.013 mm). This margin for error must
be considered before rejecting bearing.
