LIFE IN A VILLAGE (or) Intemediate - II

VILLAGE LIFE
“God made the country, and man made the town.” (William Cowper)
A Village is a small town situated in a country area. It consists of simple houses, narrow paths and unpaved
roads. It has its own customs, beliefs, values and traditions. The life in a village may seem tough but it has its
own attractions and pleasures.
It is full of natural beauty. It is full of, green fields, tall trees, vast plains and streams of water that add to the
beauty of the villages. The atmosphere is clean and fresh. The villagers lead a very simple, peaceful,
contented and natural life. Thus, being quite close to nature, life in villages is more peaceful and healthier.
Man's heart away from nature becomes hard.
Pakistan, too, is predominantly an agricultural country. In an agricultural country, villages play an important
role regarding the production of things. In Pakistan, majority of the people reside in the villages and most of
them are farmers. Their wants are few and their only wealth is lands. They plough the lands, sow the seeds,
water the crops and reap the harvest. If the harvest is good, they rejoice, but if the crops fail, they run into
debt. They are industrious, hardworking and contented.
Life in a village is very peaceful. It is almost free from atmospheric and noise pollution. Though no
necessities and comforts of life are available to the villagers, yet they are free from tensions and worries.
Villagers enjoy the peace of paradise here. They are contented with a few facilities.
Life is, really, simple but men insist on making it complicated. (Confucius)
Life in a village is not devoid of its amusement. Although there are no cinemas, clubs and recreational places
in villages, yet they one can enjoy long walks in the open fields, valleys and on the banks of the rivers. Very
simple and amusing games are played in the village, which becomes a source a joy for the people.
“Happiness is what you make it.”
The life in a village is very pure and easy. People get fresh and pure food, which is always free from the
impurities. They enjoy a pure and healthy diet. The people are strong and healthy. Their red faces show that
they have plenty of blood in their bodies.
In a village, the people are mostly uneducated and conservative but the best thing about them is that they still
have feelings of Brotherhood. In case of sorrow and happiness, they are always seen united as one community
and solve the problems of each other. They are very hospitable, generous and always co-operate with one
another. They are very loving, caring, pure and honest.
“In the country, people are quiet but few are lonely.” (Fisher)

This is only one side of the picture. Villages have their drawbacks too. The people lack new and modern
facilities. There are no proper hospitals and health units. The literacy rate is very low due to the lack of quality
education. The people also face problems like poverty, ignorance, insanitation, diseases, shortage of water and
lack of electricity. There are no transportation and communication facilities. The village lacks government
offices, private companies, factories, skilled workers and technicians. So, village life is a mixed blessing.

Despite these discomforts, life in a village has its own charms and attractions. The villagers enjoy a very
happy, pure, simple and contented life. A country that neglects its fields and farmers cannot make progress.
Ours is an agricultural country and more than seventy percent of our people live in villages. Therefore, solid
and adequate measures should be taken for the improvement of the villages, if Pakistan is to make progress.
