Stages of the lesson

Activity 1 – Warm up
1
The teacher greets the pupils and asks them how they are. After checking their
homework, she initiates a game: she asks one of the children to step outside the
classroom for a minute. Meanwhile, she hides a pencil somewhere in the
classroom, with the help of the other children. When the object is hidden, she calls
the pupil who went outside. He/she will have to come back and ask questions until
he/she manages to find the pencil? (Is it in the schoolbag? Is it under the desk?,
etc.)
Aim: to draw Ss` attention and to create a pleasant atmosphere for the lesson to
begin.
Materials: pencils
Interaction: T-SS, S-T
Estimated time: 5 min

Activity 2 – Vocabulary
The teacher puts the flashcards on the board; she points to the actions (play the
piano, dance, jump, fly, ride a horse, swim, draw), one at a time, and says the
corresponding word. The pupils listen and repeat, chorally and individually. She
asks one of the pupils to come to the board and stick the corresponding word
under each picture.
Extra activity: the pupils play the memory game - the teacher divides the class into
two groups; she asks them to close their eyes and she takes one of the pictures off
the board. When the teacher asks What`s missing?, the children open their eyes
and try to guess the picture.
Aim: to learn new words
Materials: flashcards, board
Interaction: T-SS, SS-T, S-S
Estimated time: 8 min

Activity 3 – Reading
Before going to the text, the teacher writes the title in the board and elicits the
meaning of the phrase Talent Show. She also asks the pupils if they have been to a
talent show and elicits their answers. Then she goes through the pictures of the
dialogue and sets the scene by asking questions. Next she writes on the board: I
can`t sing or play the piano. She asks the pupils to listen to the dialogue and say
which picture this sentence was taken from. She plays the recording while the
pupils listen, follow along and complete the task.
Extra activity: the pupils act out the dialogue.
Aim: to practice reading and speaking
Materials: course books, blackboard, laptop
Interaction: T-SS, S-T
Estimated time: 15 min

Activity 4 – Can a spider swim?

The teacher points to the picture of a frog, says and writes on the board: A frog can
jump. Then she asks: Can you jump? Next she says and writes: Can you swim?
Yes, I can; Can a spider swim? No, it can`t. She underlines the words in bold. She
elicits / explains the way the interrogative is formed as well as the short answers
are constructed. Finally, she writes They can`t sing and introduces the negative
form.
Aim: to introduce can/can`t
Materials: blackboard, pictures
Interaction: T-Ss, S-T
Estimated time: 10 min
