Pressure Modulator Valve

Diagnostic Trouble Codes Knowledge of: VOM use

CODES: Hold or Release solenoid open, Common open, Hold or Release solenoid short to ground or
voltage, configuration error
CAUSE: Wiring damage between modulator and ECU or incorrect configuration.
LOOK FOR: Chafed wires, damaged/corroded wires, pins, connectors, wires cut against frame, body, screws,
bent or missing connector pins. Note: drifting volt ohm readings can indicate corrosion.

1. Key on, use diagnostic software, tool or blink codes to identify modulator diagnostic trouble codes. Key off.
2. Remove wire harness connector from ECU. Locate problematic modulator pins in harness
connector layout on page 2. Set VOM to ohms Ω scale. Resistance must be stable - no drifting of VOM
readings permitted. Enter the measured values in the spaces below.
3. Measure ohms (Ω) from hold to common. Spec: 4.9 - 5.5 Ω Actual: ______ Ω
4. Measure ohms (Ω) from release to common. Spec: 4.9 - 5.5 Ω Actual: ______ Ω
5. Measure ohms (Ω) from hold to release. Spec: 9.8- 11.0 Ω Actual: ______ Ω

6. Measure Ω from each of the three modulator pins to Ground (Connector X1 Pin 1).
Spec: infinite (OL) resistance. Actual: ____ Ω
7. Measure Ω from each of the three modulator pins to Battery (Connector X1 Pin 16).
Spec: infinite (OL) resistance. Actual: ____ Ω
8. Any of steps 3-7 failed the spec? Go to step 9 to determine wiring or component fault.

All of steps 3-7 passed OK? Continue with step 8.

If test 3-5 passed, wet vehicle OEM harness. Assistant flexes wet modulator wire harness.
Repeat step 3-7 while OEM harness is wet and being flexed.

9. Step 8 passed OK? Continue with step 9.

Step 8 failed? Find damage in vehicle OE wiring harness.

Repeat steps 3 - 7 right on the modulator pins itself. Resistance specs are exactly the same as above.
Step 9 failed? Replace modulator.

10. ATC traction modulator specifications: Wire harness Pin to pin spec: 7-19 Ω Actual: ______ Ω
Pins to Ground spec: infinite (OL) Ω Actual: ______ Ω
Pins to Battery spec: infinite (OL) Ω Actual: ______ Ω

Step 10 failed at ECU wire harness connector: Go to step 11 to determine wiring or component fault.
Step 10 passed? Wet harness, flex, and repeat.

11. Repeat step 10 directly at the modulators pins, bypassing the OEM harness.
Check to the same ohm values as step 10.
Step 11 failed? Replace ATC modulator.
Step 11 passed? Correct fault in OEM vehicle wiring harness.
