As a requirement in our subject Animal Science 2 students

need to fulfill the weekend duty at the Animal Science Farm
Project where it is divided into four respective areas; Poultry,
Swine, Large and Small Ruminant Production. One of the
objectives is to develop skills in managing Animal Production.
Our class were divided as a group to perform this task, each
group has their own assigned day of duty and every group consist
of five members.

The assigned date in our group was in November 16-17, 2019

but we conducted the duty earlier last Nov. 09, 2019 because our
schedule is available.

On the first day of our duty November 09, we are first

assigned by the caretaker at the Poultry Production where we
collected 366 eggs in one day, after collecting it, we sort it
according to their sizes from small to jumbo. Then we give feed
to the 682 heads of layer by 75 kilos of feeds. There are 180
cages all in all in the poultry house; it has five capacities
per cages. The measure of each cage has length of 64 cm, width
of 47cm and has the height of 40 cm.

Our next assignment was in Piggery Production, during our

duty there were 2 sows in dry period, 13 are gestating, 4
lactating, there were 38 suckling, 7 grower, there are 4 gilt
and 3 boars, also there are 28 weanings. In the piggery house
there are 8 piglets fed by starter feeds of 6 kilo per day.
Feeding of pigs and cleaning the pens are present during that
time. Where we experienced the real life pig grower.  Then, we
measured the different types of pens, there 2 nursery pens with
400 cm length, 214 cm width and 81 cm height, for fattening
there are 17 pens, with the height of 82 cm, width of 222cm,
length of 404 cm, for gestating pens there are 5 with the length
of 233 cm, has the width of 67 cm, and the height of 112cm,
there 15 farrowing pens, with its length of 232 cm, width of 150
cm, and 87 cm height, for the boar pens, the width has the
measure of 251cm, and the length is 326cm, 114 cm height. For
additional information, they told us that the boar was existed 9
years older.

LESSON LEARNED:

In this activity we learned both easy and difficult

things. Learning the basic things, like measuring of pens,
feeding of swine and layer, injecting iron, sorting of eggs,
identifying the good layer, and so much more is such a great
lesson we gained, but not just that, also the Experienced.

To experience become a real like farm manager is a pleasure

to us. There are many new things we encountered, we are out in
our comfort zone, and we are in new environment where we need to
adjust in our surroundings because it is different from what we
always do. Being artistic or meticulous in our duty is off
limits, for us to finish our work faster. The smell of farm is
not the smell we always feel, the noise of different animals is
not the noise we always hear, the effort we exert is not the
effort we usually done when we are in school. This opportunity
will someday bring us to our future, and at the present time it
will help us to enhance our skills, and to familiarize
everything included in our course.

Trying something new is always been exciting part, but in

order for us to try everything we need to be strong and always
be positive minded, never afraid because life is full of
chances.
