HP H3C Switch - How to update Firmware and install Feature image
About Firmware files

Comware version 5
(1) .bin file - is Firmware file
* For the chassis type switches, it would be .app file.
(2) .btm file - is Bootrom file

* Recent switches include Firmware file (bin).
Comware version 7
(1) .ipe file → One .ipe file contains Firmware (bin) and Bootrom (btm) files.
Prepare
(1) The version of firmware file to be updated.
(2) FTP server for downloading the firmware file to the switch.
(3) Place the firmware file in the appropriate path of the FTP server.
Update procedure
1. Check the current Firmware version
Check the firmware version currently being loaded in the switch.
<H3C> disply version
2. Check the free space in the flash memory.

Check free space in the flash memory of the IRF configuration Master switch.
<H3C> dir / all
Check free space in the flash memory of the IRF configuration Slave switch.
<H3C> dir / all slot 2 # flash: /
If there is no free space to copy a new firmware file, delete the unused old file and upload a new firmware
file.
3. Delete unnecessary files.

Delete unnecessary files if there is not enough free space in flash memory.
<H3C> delete / u slot2 # flash: /unnecessary file
4. Check the free space in the flash memory again.

<H3C> dir / all
5. Get the firmware file from FTP server to the switch.

Login to the FTP server and copy the firmware file to the switch's flash memory.
Comware version 5
<H3C> ftp 192.168.0.1
ftp> dir
ftp> get A 5120 EI - CMW 520 - R 2215. bin
ftp> get A 5120 EI - BTM - 610. btm
ftp> quit
Comware version 7
<H3C> ftp 192.168.0.1
ftp> dir
ftp> get 5510 HI - CMW 710 - R <b> 1309 P 03. ipe
ftp> quit
Old procedures?
<H3C> Copy flash:/A5120EI-BTM-610.btm slot2#flash:/A5120EI-BTM-610.btm
<H3C> Copy flash:/A5120EI-CMW520-R2215.bin slot2#flash:/A5120EI-CMW520-R2215.bin
6. Upgrade the Firmware

Comware version 5
<H3C> boot-loader file A5120EI-CMW520-R2215.bin slot all main
Comware version 7
<H3C> boot-loader file flash: /5510HI-CMW710-R1309P03.ipe all main
Old procedures?
BootRom version upgrade
<H3C> bootrom update file A5120 EI - BTM - 610.btm slot 1
<H3C> bootrom update file A5120 EI - BTM - 610.btm slot 2
In some cases it is contained in a. bin file, so specify a .bin file in that case.
7. Restart the switch.

After the firmware update is completed, restart the switch. Restart the slave swich first.
<H3C> reboot slot 2
<H3C> reboot slot 1
8. Check the firmware version.

<H3C> disply version
9. Remove the previous version firmware file from the switch's flash memory
Check the flash memory of the IRF configuration Master switch.
<H3C> dir / all
Check the flash memory of the IRF configuration Slave switch.

Delete the files

<H3C> delete / u slot2 # flash: /s5120ei-cmw520-r2208-s168.bin
<H3C> delete / u s 5120 ei - cmw 520 - r 2208 - s 168. bin
10. Check the the flash memory again.

<H3C> dir / all
Note
When working with a serial cable, you can use XMODEM instead of FTP.
<H3C> xmodem get
Install Feature image

Download the file from the FTP server to the Flash of the switch beforehand.
<H3C> dir

1. Activate the feature file

<H3C> install activate feature flash: / 5900 _ 5920 - cmw 710 - packet - capture - r 2418 p 06.
2. Check
<H3C> display boot-loader

None
3. Commit to load the feature file with the next activation

<H3C> install commit
4. Boot-loader startup software image setting
<H3C> display boot-loader slot 1
None
<H3C> boot-loader file boot flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-boot-r2418p06.bin system flash:/5900_5920-

cmw710-system-r2418p06.bin feature flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-packet-capture-r2418p06.bin slot 1
backup
This command will set the backup startup software images. Continue? [Y/N]:Y
Verifying the file flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-packet-capture-r2418p06.bin on slot 1...........Done.
Verifying the file flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-boot-r2418p06.bin on slot 1..........Done.

The images that have passed all examinations will be used as the backup startup software images at the
next reboot on slot 1.
