Dynamic Response of

Structure

Pendahuluan

Behavior of structure under

earthquake  structural
dynamic  stresses and
deflection

Dynamic motion  ‘time

varying’  earthquake response
analysis  system structural
(SDOF)
Dynamic Equilibrium
 Basic equation
p = kv
 Dynamic equation

 Dynamic equation  strong earthquake  structural display nonlinier

behavior  caused by material nonlinierarity and/or geometric
nonlinierality
SDOF System
Three assumption are made :
1. Mass is assumed to be
concentrated at the roof level
2. Roof system is assumed to be rigid
3. Axial deformation in column is
neglected

Equlibrium :
Earthquake Ground Motion

Single story structure (shown in

figure)  subjected to earthquake
ground motion.
Free Vibration
 Free vibration occur when the structure oscillates under the action of forces
that are inherent in structure without any externally applied time
dependent load or ground motion.

Undamped structure

Free vibration

Damped structure
Kekakuan Pada Batang
Undamped Structures
Example Undamped Structure
 Construct an idealized SDOF model for the industrial building (figure shown) and
estimate the periode of vibration in the two principal direction. Note that vertical
cross bracings are made of 1 inch diameter rod, horizontal chord of trusses and all
column are W8x24
Damped Strukture
Actual structure which is in free vibration under the action of internal force, the
amplitude of vibration tends to diminish with time eventually the motion will
cease.
Tugas 1

1. A vibrating system consisting of a weight of W = 10 lb and a spring with

stiffness k = 20 lb/in is viscously damped so that the ratio of two consecutive
amplitude 1.00 to 0,85. Determine
a. The natural frequency of the undamped system
b. The logarithmic decrement
c. The damping ratio
d. The damping coefficient
e. The damped natural frequency
