CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Since 14th century, printing has played a very

important role in the world than most people notice.

Printing is the process of producing a set number of copies

of a book at one time. It is also use for the mass

reproduction of books, documents, or photographs using up-

machinery called printers. Every person dealing with

different situation in school, office, or government. There

is always a reason to go to a printing press. May it be for

personal or on purpose. The printing press is

conceptualized by a group of entrepreneurs because our

mission is to make best efforts to create a place where

customers will be able to get what they want in terms of

printable materials. We shall engage in the business of

helping our customers attain the level of creativity,

efficiency, affordability, and nearness by providing a

friendly staff, convenient location, and high quality

services throughout our time in business. Comfortable

chairs will be provided to ensure that customers would be

at ease while waiting. Quiet relaxing music and air-

conditioned will be set up to help the customers feel

better and this will differentiate this printing press from

any other competitors.

Although German silversmith Johann Gutenberg is

usually credited with the invention of the printing press,

the origins of printing are really in China. The first

prints were manufactured in China. This method involved

“rubbing off impressions from a wood block spread along the

caravan routes to the West”. The Chinese also invented

paper that provided smooth surface convenient for printing.

Printed products were imported in Europe by travelers that

brought to the continent so-called “block books,” or pieces

of wood with letters or imaged carved on to them. However,

this technique was flawed in many ways since it produced

results that were not lasting or durable. The blocks did

not withstand frequent printing, and by the time of

Gutenberg’s invention, many European craftsmen began to

experiment with new movable type design of printing that

formed the basis for the new printing press.

Nowadays, printed shirt are almost seen everywhere:

school uniforms with the school logos printed on it,

advertisements printed on shirts, title of an event,

different cartoon characters, quotable phrases and lot more

things printed on shirts. There are many processes of

transferring a design to a shirt. Computer printed designs,

screen printing process, heat transferred images, and

painting the shirt itself. In these modern days, things are

done in faster ways; that is why computers play varieties

of role. Computer printed designs are among the most common

in the market today. One can have his own picture printed

in a shirt in just an hour or he can even personalize a

design that he likes to be printed in his shirt. A design

can also be transferred in number of shirts in a clothing

company. This computer printed shirt is the focus of this

feasibility study. We come up with this product to compete

in the demand of modern days consumers. In addition to

computer printed shirts, we also come up with the idea

having painted designs as an art design exclusive for each

company. Images add art to the printed shirts. It livens up

the clothing and gives more attraction to those who see it.

Following 500 years after the invention of the

printing press, the respondents polled by the British

Sunday Times said Gutenberg was “the most significant

figure of the past 1,000 years”. This opinion echoes the

saying of Francis Bacon who believed “printing was one of

three inventions (the others were gunpowder and the

compass) that had “changed the appearance and state of the

whole world”. These opinions demonstrate how the grateful

humankind continues to recognize the outstanding

achievement of Johann Gutenberg and the decisive impact it

had on culture and scholarship in the entire world.

The invention of the printing press made the process of

printing easy and efficient, which, in turn, created

possibilities for the proliferation of knowledge through

press and book publishing. Before Gutenberg, books were

exclusive rarity rather than a common commodity. Their use

was more frequent in the houses of the rich than the middle

class, and ownership of a large library was certainly out

of reach for the poor. The current periodicals would never

have been born without the printing press that made daily

publication of news materials possible. With its

invention, printing “stimulated the literacy of lay people

and eventually came to have a deep and lasting impact on

their private lives”. In addition to publications on

religious matters, there appeared books on moralizing

subjects, fiction, medical manuals, and even travel guides.

Books were now owned and read by merchants, students, and

ordinary people. In a sense, the invention of printing was

another catalyst for the Renaissance, contributing to the

acquisition of knowledge by lay people, as opposed to the

situation before the advent of the printing press when

books and learning were accumulated in churches and

monasteries.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This feasibility study seeks to answer questions to

problems in commencing a business in the market. These

questions are:

1. Who are the target customers of this business?

2. Will the demand and supply of this business can be

sufficient to its consumers?

3. What will be this business edge among others?

4. What are its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and

threats?

5. How will the company operate?

6. Is it feasible for that business to exist in the

present scenario of the target place?

7. What will it be for the next five years?

8. Will it be able to obtain a return on investment based

on the given objectives?

Research Hypotheses

There is no significant relationship between the business

and the chosen area of production.

There is no significant relationship between the business

and its target customers and the demand and supply.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the following entities:

Customers – they will be able to find a new and special variety

of different services that this firm can offer that may satisfy

their needs and wants.

Entrepreneurs – this study will make a way for them to decide in

case of wanting to generate a new business that may be popular

especially at this generation and in the future.

Community – they will be able to realize the importance of this

kind of business in terms of the economy of the particular area

and also to be more idealistic on having these businesses within

their beloved municipalities.

Researchers – they will have an idea if this kind of business is

feasible, to know the different needs of the target market to be

presented in this study and also to create a marketing strategy

to ensure the existence of the business in the near future.

Future Researchers – it will serve as their reference in case of

conducting their own study similar to this kind of field.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This part will discuss the marketing aspect, technical

aspect, organization and management aspect, as well as the

financial aspect in establishing a Printing Press Business

in Barangay Poblacion Centro, Aliaga, Nueva Ecija.

MARKETING ASPECT

1. TARGET CUSTOMERS: The target customers of the printing

unit are stitching and composite units, manufacturing

value added products like apparel and made-ups. To

procure the processing orders from these

composite/stitching units, brochures and other

advertising materials will be circulated and visits

will be made by the marketing personnel to introduce

the new processing unit in the market.

2. MARKET DEMAND AND SUPPLY: The demand for processed

fabric is rising in accordance with the increase in

production and export of value added product i.e.

apparels and made-ups. The export of apparels and made

ups is improving not only in value but also in

quantity, hence producing more opportunities of higher

profitability for existing processing units and

inviting new entrants in the processing industry.

Since the processing unit is a capital intensive

project, therefore number of independent processing

units is not as high to meet the growing demand of

processed fabric.

3. PRICING APPROACH: Production cost must be minimized so


that customers can capable to buy.

To develop the processes involved in operationalizing

the project in the most effective and economical way.

To know the production requirement in the

establishment of a digital printing business.

To know that the wages of every staff will be given

every 15th day of the month.

To design organizational set up that is best suited


for the proposed project.

To identify the roles that will be played by everyone


with the use of the organizational structure that can be
showed along this study.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This study identifies critical trends including the

evolution of the consumer experience, the rise of data, the

importance of mass personalization and product

differentiation, and the role of social media in content

generation and consumption. Successful printers will emerge

in formulating new business models based upon key concepts

identified in the study, that leverage these outside trends

to innovate, differentiate, specialize and provide new

services. The problem of scheduling a printing press for a

periodical with several editions, so as to minimize the

costs, is discussed. A mixed-integer program is formulated

which includes most of the costs and constraints, but it is

not solvable for problem sizes of practical interests. A

heuristic method, based on the traveling salesman problem,

is proposed. A sample computation is included.

Digital printing methods have developed considerably

in recent years, both in terms of quality and productivity.

New products based on the variable data printing capability

of digital printing have been introduced. Digital methods

have also taken market share from mechanical printing

methods in the on-demand and short-run production of

traditional products. The market share of digital printing

will continue to increase in the future.

Environmental indicators used in earlier studies of

printing can be used for digital printing as well. These

include physical and monetary input and output figures like

energy and materials consumption, emissions and waste

output. The suitable functional units are the weight and

the surface area of products, e.g. tone of printed products

or million duplex printed A4 sheets. Electrophotography is

based on an image carrier surface that is photoconductive

and can be charged electrically. The image is formed by

discharging parts of the photoconductive surface, typically

with a laser or a LED array. A powder or liquid toner

attaches to the image areas of the photoconductive surface,

and electrostatic forces transfer the toner onto the

substrate. The toner is then fixed to the paper, usually

with the help of a heated fuse. Conventional dry toners are

manufactured by grinding the composite of binder, colourant

and additives into a powder, and screening the powder to

achieve the desired size distribution. Binders must be

suitable for the pulverising process, which precludes the

use of “softer” compounds like waxes. When using these

conventional toners, fuser oil must be applied to the fuser

roll to prevent the toner particles from adhering to it

roll. The toner binder melts and adheres to the paper

surface.In inkjet printing, small droplets of liquid ink

are sprayed from nozzles onto the paper or other substrate.

The two basic techniques are continuous inkjet and drop-on-

demand inkjet. In the former, a continuous stream of

droplets is charged according to the signal describing the

print image. The colorant can be pigment or dye. Soluble

dye inks have provided better performance with respect to

jettability and nozzle clogging, but the print quality on

porous substrates has been limited due to high ink

absorption. Pigment-based inks have provided better print

quality on porous substrates, because Water-based inks are

cheaper than other liquid inks, but have problems with

light fastness and water fastness. Solvent-based inks have

low surface tension, making them well suited to non-porous

substrates, and they dry quickly by evaporation use more of

the colourant stays on the surface of the substrate.The

surveyed literature indicates that inkjet is undergoing

strong development in productivity, print quality and

choice of substrates. Through the recent improvements in

print heads and ink formulations, inkjet is becoming well

suited to many graphic and non-graphic applications, and it

is predicted to take a share of offset markets. In

transactional and trans-promo printing, inkjet will

continue to compete with electrophotography. In outdoor

advertising and other wide-format applications, inkjet

already has a well-established strong position in the

market, where serigraphy is losing market share. Up to now,

high quality inkjet printing on paper has required special

papers with suitable surface and absorption properties to

control dot gain and ink penetration. Developments in the

inkjet technology and materials, such as the bonding agent

technology of HP, will enable the use of newsprint and

other cheaper bulk paper grades.3D printing engages

students with an immersive learning experience. The most

complex subjects come to life when students learn by

creating, touching, and experimenting with the subject

matter. While you, as educators, are preparing them to be

competent and self-sufficient they are learning the skills

they will need in their future careers. A 3D printer for

the classroom is a great way to inspire tomorrow’s

inventors, thinkers and educators.In conclusion, it can be

said that there is a large demand for the products and

services of the printing and publishing industry,

especially abroad. Filipino firms, however, have failed to

tap this huge market because of constraints in terms of

investing in state-of-the-art technology and in terms of

the training and development of its human resources. This

reluctance of local firms to upgrade their equipment or to

invest in staff training is largely because of the low

returns on investment caused by high production costs and

stiff pricing competition among players in the local

market. Several suggestions have been forwarded to increase

the competitiveness of the industry. According to Torio

(1999), Filipino printing firms need to increase production

and cut costs to be able adjust to a highly-competitive

environment, This can be done by investing in new

technology and by training its workers while providing for

attractive compensation packages. Other innovative

solutions are: standardization of each stage of the

printing process, specialization in services and products,

training of clients and end-users on the technology, and

values reorientation of workers and management.One of the

major economic goals of the Philippines is for local

businesses to achieve global competitiveness, consistent

with the overall direction under the mediumterm framework

for export development. According to the Philippine Export

Development Plan 1999-2001, "this direction recognizes that

the effort to develop the capacity to compete globally is

not limited to export industries alone but extends to

domestic market-oriented industries and support services."

The printing and publishing industry in the Philippines is

one such industry that could take advantage of the huge

opportunities offered by liberalization. The question is

whether its potential as a major export industry could be

realized.Aside from the large number of printing companies,

there has been a dramatic increase in the number of design

and graphic imaging service companies over the past few

years, one that can be attributed to the rapid development

of pre-press technology and the dramatic reduction in the

cost of computer hardware. Furthermore, the opening of the

world market via the World Wide Web, has opened up

opportunities for the Philippines, which has a relatively

high percentage of college graduates who are adept in the

English language. Though 3D printing is still a growing

technology, it already has many benefits and drawbacks.

While many people agree that this technology could change

the world, there are also those who believe it could have

extreme consequences if it is not researched and tested

thoroughly. As the technology beings to grow more and more

throughout the next couple of years there will be more

information and data that will determine whether it is a

technology that is here to stay or it is something that

will simply not make it. For now it is something that has

to be further looked into in order to fully understand its

extents whether good or bad.

We intend to have periodic meetings and training

sessions teaching employees how to communicate effectively

with customers on the phone, and in person. One of our

aims, in hopes of satisfying our customers, is to

demonstrate alternative ways to do their printing. This

should, in many cases, save them time and money.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method used by the

researchers, the steps taken to support the research, and

the treatments of data used in the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used the descriptive method in

conducting this research study. It helped the researchers

to find out what are the things needed in establishing a

business.Research questionnaire will be provided by the

researchers to determine the perception of the student and

the competitors about the proposed business.

Since proponents found out that the location of the

business is near the town market, so the target customers

of the proposed business will be the students, office

workers, residents, and the people of Aliaga. Targeting a

specific market does not mean that you are excluding people

who do not fit on criteria.. Rather, target marketing

allows you to focus your marketing dollars and brand

message on a specific market that is more likely to inquire

your services than other markets. This is a much more

affordable, efficient, and effective way to reach potential

customers and generate business.

of its undeniable impact on all of us. Social media started

out as another way to connect or reconnect people with each

other but it became more that. In business, people use

business and let everyone know about it. In our business,

we will use our social media accounts to post and advertise

the services we offered. It is one of the easiest, least

expensive, and most effective way to gain exposure and to

strengthen the business reputation. Social media is also

fantastic for customer's engagement too. They can send

their documents on a Facebook account under the name of our

business and get it when it's done. They don't have to

waste their time waiting. All of these situations offer

great marketing and promotion for the printing business

while also being able to engage and interact with the

customers. Second, having activities and promos held at the

printing press to create awareness of business. Events can

be a raffle draw of those who come to avail our services

and having a discount card for those who spend at least 500

pesos worth of services. Lastly, signage will be placed in

front of the store. Signs can help attract attention, but

going out into the community with freebies is often a much

more effective way to get a customer. Handing outs fliers

and coupon for free minor services.

JOB DESCRIPTIONAND SPECIFICATION

 OWNER: Are responsible of orienting, directing and

controlling the business. Their assignment also is to

ensure the profitability of the business, the

satisfaction of the consumers and the expansion of it

in the near future.

 CASHIER: Their job is to take the order of the

customer and assist them in the store if needed. Also

to manage cash and sales transaction, requesting price

check, collecting payment and giving appropriate

change.

 STAFF/PRINTING STAFF: Sets up and operates bindery

equipment to cut, assemble, staple, or bind materials.

Maintains printing machinery and equipment. Reviews

layout and customer order to determine size and style

of type.

 JANITOR: Perform heavy cleaning duties, such as

cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and

glass, and removing rubbish.

The fixed assets has approximately a sub total of Php

1,000,009 including the land which price is approximately

Php 500,000, machineries and equipment Php 468,460,

The sub total of expenses is Php 9,400 which includes

electricity connection charges Php 6,000, water drilling

charges Php 2,000, and also the other expense which has

something to do with the wifi connections is approximately

Php 1,400. Lastly, in the expenses also is the pre

operating and operating expense which costs approximately

Php 12,000. Therefore the total project cost is Php

1,021,409.

SOURCE OF FUND

The capital requirement needed in the proposed

business will be half from the investment of the owner and

the other is loan from a bank.

Tools in Financial analysis

Financial statements are prepared to have complete

information regarding assets, liabilities, equity, reserves,

expenses and profit and loss of an enterprise. To analyze &

interpret the financial statements, commonly used tools are

comparative statements, common size statements etc. Let us

take a look.

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

This chapter contains the data results of the

questionnaires done by the researchers. The respondents

were twenty (20) grade 12 students of Aliaga National High

School and ten (10) random competitors who had an existing

similar business. The questions were designed for the

researcher to address the student and competitor perception

about the printing business and its environment.

The results gathered were put on a table and are

presented in this chapter. For better understanding the

results were divided.

I. Demographic Profile of the Respondents

The researchers asked the student respondents about

their name, age, strand, grade level and gender while for

the competitors were the name of their business.

came from the Accountancy and Business Management strand,

two (2) students from the General Academic Strand and eight

(8) student respondents from the strand Humanities and

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

Summary of Findings

The study created a research about the perception of

Grade 12 students and competitors of how feasible a

printing press business here in the municipality. It

discusses the different needs and wants of the students and

the competitor attitude and manner on how to improve or

make the business competitive for a long period of time.

The student’s name, age, strand, grade level and

gender was taken while for the competitors was the name of

their business.

Majority of the student respondents answered that they

also need a printing press for their studying because with

the help of it their life will be easier.

The majority of the competitor respondents answered

that establishing a printing press business is profitable

within the area and with the help of different strategies

in marketing and also improving communication and

management skills is an important aspect in this field.

Conclusion

The conclusion of this study includes items that have

been identified by the research questionnaire provided by

the researchers regarding a printing press business and its

environment. The findings of this research will be shown

below:

1. More than half of the students answered that their

teacher was not always giving them home works to be

printed.

2. Majority of the students do not have printer.

3. Some of the students prefer lecture notes than printed

notes.

4. Majority of the students are producing 10-20 copies of

printed materials per day.

5. Almost of the students spend Ᵽ50- Ᵽ 100 for producing

printed materials each week.

6. Majority of the students are buying t-shirts.

7. Seventeen (17) of the students are prefer using round

neck t-shirt and the three (3) of them prefer using

collared shirts.

8. Twelve (12) of the students are prefer plain t-shirt

and eight (8) of the students prefer multi colored t-

shirt.

9. More than half of the students prefer personalized t-

shirt than imitated design shirts.

10.The maximum money that the students are willing to

spend in buying t-shirts is Ᵽ300-Ᵽ500 while the minimum is

Ᵽ 50.

products and offers they will avail in any printing press

their antecedent states.
