Title of the Project:

“Comparative Investigation of ‘Hume Pipe Culvert’ & ‘Box Culvert’ Based

Upon its Structural Functionality & Efficiency”

Aim:
“Comparative Investigation of ‘Hume Pipe Culvert (HPC)’ & ‘Box Culvert’ on
complete designing of structure by manual and computer approach to check its final
feasibility on the field”

Objectives:

The objectives of this project are:

1. To Study the Structural Behavior based upon design of HPC and Box Culvert.

2. To Determine the Feasibility of HPC and Box Culvert based on Site Observation.

3. To Investigate whether a Box Culvert is feasible instead of existing HPC (4 nos.) on

the basis of its structural functionality and proficiency.

4. To Design the HPC and Box Culvert according to appropriate IRC.

5. To Compute the shear force, axial force, deflections and bending moments of the
structure using STAAD.

6. To Compare the efficiency performance of HPC or Box Culvert based on its

functionality.

Literature Review:

1. B.N. Sinha’s & R.P. Sharma’s [8] paper deals with box culverts made of RCC, with and
without cushion. The size, invert level, layout etc. are decided by hydraulic considerations
and site conditions. The cushion depends on road profile at the culvert location. The scope of
this Paper has been further restricted to the structural design of box. The structural design
involves consideration of load cases (box empty, full, surcharge loads etc.) and factors like
live load, effective width, braking force, dispersal of load through fill, impact factor, co-
efficient of earth pressure etc. Relevant IRC Codes are required to be referred. The structural
elements are required to be designed to withstand maximum bending moment and shear
force. The Paper provides full discussions on the provisions in the Codes, considerations and
justification of all the above aspects on design.
2. Paul Tom P’s [9] analysis and design of bridge and culvert study paper was carried out at
Larsen & Toubro, EDRC, Transportation IC`, with the objective of gaining first-hand
knowledge about the technical practices in a structural design office, office ethics and
corporate lifestyle. L & T Transportation Infrastructure handles major roadway projects which
includes National and State Highways all around India and associated structures like flyovers,
Vehicle Underpass (VUP), Pedestrian Underpass (PUP), Rail Over Bridge (ROB), major &
minor bridges and cross-drainage works like culverts. The structural design wing of this
department handles these structures of all Infrastructure Projects. The design of the VUP Sub-
structure & Super-structure and box culvert included in this internship report are designed
based on the Working Stress. Method as per the design codes published by The Indian Roads
Congress.

3. Mahesh D. Kakade, Rajkuwar A. Dubal’s [10] study of behavior of RCC Box culvert
under the influence of static and Dynamic loads in accordance with IRC deals with study of
some of the design parameters of box culverts like effect of earth pressure and depth of
cushion provided on top slab of box culverts and the relative study of box full and box empty
conditions is done using finite element analysis tool ANSYS. The finite element model of
ANSYS can be compared with numerical models as a plain strain problem. Furthermore, box
culvert with cushion or without cushion is also compared for different cases.

4. P. Leela Krishna and Dr. K. Rajasekhar’s [11] analysis and design of box culvert
project is to model and analyze the box culvert using STAAD PRO software. This software is
an effective and user-friendly tool for three-dimensional model generation, analysis and multi
material design. The results obtained from STAAD PRO are compared with the manual
calculations obtained using MATLAB. The structural elements of box culvert are designed to
withstand maximum bending moment and shear force. The results obtained from STAAD are
almost similar to manual calculations.

5. I. L. Nwaogazie and G. C. Agiho’s [12] performance analysis of Box and circular

culverts using Hy 8 Software for Aluu Clan, Port Harcourt study is on culvert performance
analysis carried out in Aluu clan comprising of nine communities. A total of ten culverts
located across the roads within the communities were inspected and monitored during rainy
season. It entails assessing the culverts to ascertain their functionalities. Amongst all the
culverts, one location was observed to be problematic because of the extent and duration of
flooding after an incidence of intense rainfall in the area. From field data obtained, the rational
method was employed to determine the peak design flow as 450 ft3/s (12.74 m3/s). The
hydraulic analysis was carried out using HY-8 software (in imperial units) by US Federal
Highway Administration, a powerful tool for analyzing variety of culvert shapes and
configurations. From field measurements it was discovered that the existing circular culvert
comprising of three barrels of 3 ft.(914 mm) diameter, each has a headwater elevation of
115.72 ft. (35.27 m) as compared to the roadway elevation of 115 ft. (35.05m).
