 Kali name - Bhavatarini – She offers Boon of piravaa varam. The Garbha Griha houses the deity of goddess
Kali stands on the chest of Lord Shiva, who rests in a lying posture. The two idols stand beautifully on a
thousand-petal lotus, made of silver. ( 4 hands – Blessing (varada) , Thiruvadi Abhaya - Fearlessness ,
weapon, Asuran head ) Leg on shiva chest ; soolam with jandai , 3 eyed, cresent moon on her brow ). This
Roopam is Saumya swaroopam and is considered passive and motherly form of Kali, ideal for propitiation
and asking of boons.

 Flight of stairs will lead you inside Rada krishna temple. The temple houses a 21 and half inches idol of Lord
Krishna and 16 inches idol of Radha. It is said that Sri Ramkrishna himself used to perform puja at this
temple. Look inside one of the side rooms to see the temple’s original statue of Lord Krishna. The idol was
dropped by a priest, but it has been repaired so well that it’s difficult to see the cracks.

 Rani Rashomani shrine – Temple is Built by Rani Rashomani in 1855. Rashmoni, prepared to go upon a
long pilgrimage to the sacred Hindu city of Kashi to express her devotions to the Divine Mother. Rani was to
travel in twenty four boats, carrying relatives, servants and supplies. According to traditional accounts, the
night before the pilgrimage began, Rashmoni had a vision of the Divine Mother, in the form of the
goddess Kali in a dream

 Kali said there is no need to go to Banaras. Install my statue in a beautiful temple on the banks of the Ganges
river and arrange for my worship there. Then I shall manifest myself in the image and accept worship at that
place

 Sri Sri Jagadishwari Mahakali, with Ramkumar Chhattopadhyay was the head priest; soon his younger
brother Gadai or Gadadhar (later known as Ramakrishna) moved in and so did nephew Hriday to assist him.
On 31 May 1855 more than 1 lakh (one hundred thousand) Brahmins were invited from different parts of the
country to grace the auspicious occasion. The next year, Ramkumar Chattopadhyay died, the position was
given to Ramakrishna, along with his wife Sarada Devi, stayed in Nahabat (music room), in a small room on
the ground floor, which now a shrine dedicated to her

 Nahabat - The chamber in the northwestern corner just beyond the last of the Shiva temples, is where
Ramakrishna spent a considerable part of his life . According to legends, this was the vary place, where
Ramakrishna attained his divine enlightenment. Here he obtained a spiritual vision and witnessed a holy
glance of Goddess Kali. Sri Paramhansa’s two cots, the one he slept in and the one he sat on to talk to

 The Panchavati garden, a congregation of five ancient trees, located in close proximity to the Dakshineswar
Temple is nicely landscaped and is well maintained by the temple committee. It is said that Sri Ramakriahna
used to meditate at this very site. Stop by the old fig tree that is the last remaining tree of the temple’s
original panchabati. A panchavati is a garden of five trees where spiritual practices are observed.

Known and unknown facts:


 Construction of the temple was initiated in the year 1847 and completed in 1855.
 Total area of the temple complex measures 54.4bighas and cost Rani Rashmoni around Rs 42, 500.
 Idols were installed on the auspicious 'snana-yatra' day, 31st May 1855.
 Visiting hours: October to March- 06:00am to 12:30pm and 03:00pm to 08:30pm
April to September- 06:00am to 12:30pm and 03:00pm to 09:00pm

The Mantra consists of three seeds, krim, hum and hrim, and the name ‘dakhshina kalike’ and ‘swaha’, which
signifying offering. This mantra is used by the devotees of Kali, the preserver of Earth, who saves us from all the
ignorance and the fear of death.

Meaning: Aum, Her ten hands is holding a scimitar, disk, mace, arrows and bow, lance, club, a skull and a conch shell.
She is a three-eyed goddess, Her body is covered with ornaments, and Her countenance with the brilliance of blue
diamonds, with ten limbs. We offer our service to mahakali, She who Brahma praised for protection from the
demons madhu and kaitava, when Bishnu was in sleep.
