ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

 Assisted method of reproduction in which the sperm is provided typically by mean of


masturbation and is injected into the woman’s reproductive tract through a catheter.
 Old form of fertilizing a woman other than a naturally fertile intercourse.

How Is It Performed?
1. Medication is administered to activate egg development.
2. Semen is obtained by masturbation after a designated few days of refraining from
ejaculation.
3. Seminal processing follows which is characterized by washing and purification of
semen specimen at the laboratory.

 Impotency, male sterility
 Couples with immunological irregularities
 Women’s infertility with:
o Endometriosis
o An ovulatory infertility

1. Wife’s problem of not being fertilized via natural intercourse, the husband produces
gametes (by masturbation) and submits for A.I.
2. Under natural intercourse, the sperm cannot get in touch near the cervix (in case of
epispadias or hypospadias)
3. Husband has oligospermia. His Masturbated semen is “centrifuged to increase its
concentration” for possible A.I.
4. Husband has azoospermia. A third party produce sperm to be injected to the wife.
5. Other woman donates ova or the use of her uterus for insemination of sperm of the
