THE MERCHANT MARINE

Get to know more about the home of the world’s finest mariners.

The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy continues to utilize its proud

maritime tradition, producing marine, naval, and coast guard officers for shipboard
and shore-based positions, providing the best service, knowledge and skills only
PMMA graduates possess!
The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy is the premier merchant marine
academy in the Philippines. Operated by the Philippine government under the
supervision of the Commission on Higher Education, the academy is located in San
Narciso, in the province of Zambales. Wikipedia
The Merchant Marine primarily transports cargo and passengers during
peacetime; in times of war, the Merchant Marine can be an auxiliary to the United
States Navy, and can be called upon to deliver military personnel and material for
the military.
The merchant marine consists of U.S.-owned vessels including cargo ships
and tankers that import and export goods. Individuals become members of the
merchant marine, or mariners, after they receive the Merchant Mariner's Credential
(MMC), issued by the United States Coast Guard. The MMC guarantees that a
mariner has all the required experience and knowledge needed to work on a vessel.
Merchant Marines, or mariners, serve as officers on civilian ships to ensure
the safety and protection of U.S. goods and transport. While considered part of the
U.S. military, merchant marines have no active combat role. Rather, they serve as
captains, mates, pilots and seaman serve on ships sailing on oceans, lakes and
inland rivers. They can be commissioned as officers or serve as unlicensed seaman.
Merchant marines travel constantly and are away from home for long periods of
time.
THE OFFSHORE GAS AND OIL INDUSTRY

The oil and gas industry, or commonly known as the offshore industry, is the
world’s most in demand market. With the world consuming 30 billion barrels of oil
per year, petroleum has become the most valuable commodity traded in the global
markets.

Impact of the oil and gas industry

The leading governing bodies responsible for setting standards in this demanding
industry are OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and
OAPEC (Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries). Such
organizations are needed in setting policies on pricing, energy trades and other
concerns so that control over this global power will be regulated.

Over the years, the oil and gas industry has proven itself in becoming the most
important commodity. http://ctsi.com.ph/index.php/introduction-to-the-oil-and-gas-
industry/ http://ctsi.com.ph/index.php/introduction-to-the-oil-and-gas-industry/
http://ctsi.com.ph/index.php/introduction-to-the-oil-and-gas-industry/It has control
over financial and political powers, and can even become both an ally and threat to
the environment. Oil has mostly directed the future of human civilization.

Oil industry workforce

In terms of dollar value, the exploration, refining, production, and distribution of
petroleum is the world’s largest industry. This is why many countries, companies
and individuals take this path. To make sure that everyone who are involve in this
industry are knowledgeable and competent, the OPITO (Offshore Petroleum
Industry Training Organization) sets its standards.

The job required for this industry includes production, drilling, rigging, surveying,
piping, welding, diving, quality checks, as well as in health and safety.

The oil and gas industry demands long working hours that could last up to 12 hours
a day. But the rewards that could get from this industry make up for the difficult
conditions that workers are put under. This is why in order to ensure the safety and
protection of oil rigs and the people working there, the industry requires
individuals subjected to rigorous offshore safety training and environmental
regulation education.

At present times, the petroleum industry serves as a major factor in our lives. It
could be as a source of commodity, of financial struggle, of power control among
countries, or of a risky career. If you want to be part of this elite yet hazardous
industry, you must be fully-equipped with the knowledge and survival skills
needed for it.

THE CRUISE INDUSTRY

The cruise industry is a highly profitable international activity, and the
fastest growing sector of the travel, tourism and leisure industry.

The cruise industry has gone through significant changes from the days of
transoceanic transportation and tropical vacations only available to the domain of
society’s elite, to the modern multimillion tourism and leisure industry that offers
an affordable vacation option and a level of comfort difficult to match for the
average citizen, with a number of people cruising that seems to grow every year in
the world.

A relatively reduced number of cruise companies compete for world market

shares in different ways, developing innovative commercial strategies and
investing multi-million dollar budgets in the research and development of state-of-
the-art vessels able to combine the elegance of high quality living spaces with the
cutting-edge technological concepts needed to provide stability to these new
floating hotels, pushing the boundaries of naval construction and design to the
limits for exceptional navigation performance and liveboard comfort while
maintaining the highest standards for safety and environmental management
systems.

The modern cruise industry offers an option for everyone, exceeding the
expectations of its customers, with an also growing number of companies
specializized in offering more choices and alternatives, including smaller cruise
ships, yachts and sailing vessels that carry out from ten-thirty to a few hundred
passengers to exotic and, sometimes, remote destinations and regulated ports,
prohibited to larger liners because of the concerns about what the influx of
thousands of travelers would have on the local environment.

This section is dedicated to provide background information on diverse

aspects related to the cruise industry and its significant contribution to the world
economy in terms of investment and job creation, including also its positive and
negative features, and a series of important unsolved economic, social and
environmental issues; offering different subsections arranged by subject-heading
topics.
