Part I.

The nationwide survey on the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among high school students which
was done in 1989 was conducted in the following manner:

1. All regions in the country were represented in the survey.

2. From each region, two provinces were selected.
3. All secondary schools in each province were stratified into 4, namely: urban public, urban private,
rural public, and rural private.
4. From each stratum, a random sample of secondary schools was selected.
5. Within each sample school, classes were stratified according to year level.
6. A random sample of classes was selected from each year level and all student in the sample classes
were included in the study.

Given the above sampling procedure, determine the following:

1. Target population – High School Students
2. Sampling population – Assumed sampling population of 21,760 individuals
3. Stratifying variables (identify all)
- Urban Public
- Urban Private
- Rural Public
- Rural Private
- 1st year High School
- 2nd year High School
- 3rd year High School
- 4th year High School
4. Sampling frames needed to select the samples (identify all)

5. Elementary unit
- Individuals that are students in the classes selected from each year level.

Part II.

In order to determine the standard heights and weights of Filipinos age 0-19 years, the Food and Nutrition
Research Institute of DOST conducted an anthropometric survey. To assure representativeness of the sample,
subjects were taken from each regions of the country. From each region, two sample provinces were drawn.
From each of the sample province, two municipalities were drawn; in turn two barangays from each
municipality were selected. Within each sample barangay, sample households were chosen by systematic
sampling. All apparently “healthy” individuals 0-19 years of age in each sample household were included in
the study.

1. What is the target population?

Answer: Filipinos who ages 0-19 years old
2. What sampling design was used?
Answer: Cluster Sampling

Indicate whether each of the following is a stratum, a sampling unit, or an elementary unit:
